My name is Milo and I am 10 years old. I was adopted by my family when I was 1.5 years old. I was saved at the Humane Shelter. Right after I got home I was sick, but my mommy and family made sure I went to the vet and got the medicine I needed and I got well. I had belonged to someone who loved me because I was neutered and declawed in front. Fast forward a couple of years and I fell off the open balcony in the house....daddy made sure I didn't hit the table but I hurt my leg. My mommy and family took me to the vet and I had to have surgery on my leg because it popped out of joint. The first surgery didn't take so the vet was nice and fixed it at no cost a second time. It has been good for over 7 years. I can run and chase butterflies and it doesn't bother me.
In November 2008 Mommy noticed I started drinking lots of water and would clank my bowl so I could get more. She took me to the vet and heard the dreaded word that 'Milo has diabetes'. I didn't feel good and knew mommy could help me. Mommy cried but learned how to give me shots. I didn't like anyone buy mommy giving me my shots. When they went on vacation and I went to see grandma and grandpa I would make grandpa chase me around the dining room table trying to catch me to give me a shot. Sometimes he didn't get me....hahaha! I felt better getting my shots and eating my dry diabetes catfood.
In August 2009 I started drinking more and more again so mommy called the vet (we had switched after I was diagnosed with diabetes because mommy thought vet wasn't nice and didn't know what she was talking about). The new vet I had gone to for almost a year wouldn't make an appointment for me...just told mommy to increase my insulin. Mommy didn't like that and called the old vet (knowing the vet I had seen at the practice left). They got me right in and tested my levels (something the new/old vet hadn't done in the year I went there--a big no no no mommy found out). My levels were 220+. They told mommy about home testing and increased insulin. It really didn't help because mommy would test me and got a reading of almost 400 once! Then the best thing happened....mommy found these boards.
She asked and got help from all the people here. She told daddy it was hard trusting people on a message board but the people here seemed to know what to do. She found out that dry food is bad...even the diabetic recommended type. She found the list and got me the low carb Fancy Feast. She kept testing me...my levels started going down....down...down. Then the range came where people said not to give me insulin....mommy was scared but followed the advice. She checked my levels so often my little ears were red but the levels stayed down and I went 1 day without insulin, then 2 days, then 3 days, then 4 days, etc. etc. On September 19th I will hit the 2 year anniversary of OTJ...or no insulin.
I lost weight and the vet is amazed. He had never heard of the low carb, wet food approach but he told mommy to try if she wanted. He is amazed everytime he sees me at how good I look and how I am OTJ. I have more energy...run around and stay awake most of the day. I eat my wet food, but also enjoy chicken, Lucky Charms milk, ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, Pringles (sour cream and onion) and just about anything. My mommy tests my glucose monthly and I am always in the high 50's to mid 60's. I sometimes get higher carb wet food as a treat. I know how lucky I am and know if mommy hadn't found these boards I probably wouldn't be here.
To all those who are newly diagnosed tell your mommy and daddy to ask questions and keep asking. If they don't like what the vet tells them tell them to find a new vet. Tell them to ask questions here and follow advice...the people here are great and no question is stupid. Know to let your mommy and daddy know when you don't feel good---tell them to get you help if you don't. Diabetes in kitties is something that can be treated with insulin and in some of our cases diet controlled (but that could change anytime).
Thank you to all my mommy's friends on FDMB for helping me reach 2 years OTJ. I wish all my kitty friends here good health and happy homes.
Thank you from Milo and his mommy
