Hi all. I have been posting on Community. I brought home my favorite cat, Blue, from the animal sanctuary where I volunteer. He is an 18 year old Chartreux and has been my favorite cat up there since I started going there about a year and a half ago.

Yesterday we went to the vet and had a bunch of tests and vax done, etc. My vet called me tonight, yes on a Sunday, and told me that he checked out great, except for the fact that he is barely Hyper-T. 4.9 on the Antech scale. reference range .8-4.0, I think.

He tests negative for FeLK, FIV. His kidney numbers are awesome!

He's in isolation here for two weeks due to some nasty ear mites.

Dr R suggested that we do a transdermal tapazole and then once he gets the all clear with the ear mites, consider radioiodine therapy. As it happens, there is a place not too far away and the vet there is somewhat of an expert on Hyper T.

Anyone with any prior experience with HyperT and radioiodine treatment............. I would love to hear your thoughts.....

Thanks,

Holly

I'm sorry I have no experience with this but wanted to say how much I admire you for taking this boy in and helping him. My goodness...You ROCK. ;)

Re: My new boy Blue is Hyper-T

I have had two of my cats treated by RadioCat. They did well. My Bailey also became HyperT but he was not in good health so I started treating hem with the transdermal but then changed to the pills because of the high dose. He did Ok. My Lightning became HyperT last year. Is in on low dose of the pills and is doing good. He is not really a candidate for RadioCat since he does not eat well and I made to syringe feed him frequently.

Thanks for the responses with HyperT.

So we went to the vet this morning to get the chest xrays, which we will need for the I131 treatment and they showed that he has asthma. I feel so bad because he has had it probably for a while. I am waiting to hear back from the vet to see what our next step is. She was going to call Flovent into a pharmacy and I have also heard to ask for albuterol.

They had a big emergency at the vet's so they have been backed up all day and probably won't get back to me until tonight.

I am just getting a chance to start researching the asthma stuff online as I am still at work. I probably won't have a chance to do more research until tonight.

I hope that I can handle this. I did pretty well with all of the stuff related to CRF and FD.

Any input from folks dealing with feline asthma is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Holly

HI Holly, one of my kitties (unfortunately she developed lymphoma and is GA) did have feline asthma. We had her on steroids for a while but switched her to the flowvent inhaler with the Aerokat mask. She did better on the inhaler then on the steroids. I would sit in a big chair with her on my lap facing away from me - then after giving her some loving put the mask over her face and hit the button. I wouldn't say she liked it but she didn't fight me on it either. Flowvent is a bit spendy and I found that I got a better deal on it buying it from a Canadian Pharmacy. Jan
