I had a different user name some time ago but have since forgotten it, but my kitty Lil' Dude was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago. It was a rough time for all of us, especially finding a food we could afford and of course, learning what's best to give him and what not to give him.

I have been unable to check his blood glucose lately, but I am happy to say that his neuropathy is completely gone now!! He developed pretty bad problems with his feet (all four were affected) that he could not walk very far before having to lie down (it was comparable to how a seal moves about, sadly). Now he can run and walk without ANY issues whatsoever. We have a baby gate blocking off the kitchen and he can even jump over that (though it did wow me, it worried me since I was afraid he would attempt to jump up onto the dryer to get the dry food we leave out for my other cat, but fortunately he will peer dreamily at the dryer but doesn't attempt THAT jump). :)

His water intake is not near what it used to be, he doesn't get matted fur any more from lack of grooming, and he is just doing SO much better overall. We are very proud of his success. Unfortunately he is a very picky eater sometimes, but we are also very stubborn in that he won't get what he wants. :p

He gets a gourmet classic food we buy from the pet store. It's very nicely priced and very affordable. He seems to get irked at me because he prefers the grilled or sliced or whatever types, but after reading about the wheat gluten issues, we stopped buying that type.

We will be taking him to the vet for a check up soon & we will find out how is BG is doing, and I hope to have some good news.

I want to say thank you to this place because without this place I do not think my kitty would have been able to get well (my vet even thanked me for the info that I learned from this place because it has helped him help other clients with diabetic animals!!). You are a life-saver (literally) and I honestly couldn't be more appreciative of the info and help I've received here. :)

Is this you? http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53029&p=572004&hilit=Lil'+Dude#p572004 I did a search for lil dude. Cant imagine a lot of cats with that name!

Glad to hear he is doing better.. your neuropathy story gives us all hope. Would love to see you testing him more but...

What kind of food/brand are you feeding him now?

Wendy

YUP, that's me! LOL, my username was Lil' Dude. Go figure. We've been unable to test him lately because of running out of strips. When we take him to the vet we'll get another script for Lantus and start testing again.

We are using Grreat Choice Gourmet Classic brand from Petsmart. He's doing really well on it, though some types he's not too fond of (beef mostly).

Welcome back, Lil' Dude and Robin! :YMHUG:

What type of meter are you using? If you're located in the US, the ReliOn brand from Walmart (Arkay meters that have simply been rebranded) are some of the more inexpensive options for test strips, with the ReliOn Prime being the cheapest at $9 for 50 strips.

Lots of cats have sensitivities or even allergies to beef and other red meats. My cat, Mikey, will throw up every time I try to give him anything with any red meat in it, like venison or even just beef broth. Seafood is another one that is a common allergy for cats and even if they're not allergic to it, it's advisable to only feed it to them about once or twice a week or less due to contaminants (like mercury) and numerous other reasons.
