My cat Oze (his the ginger & white, the calico is Buffy) was diagnosed diabetic last year in October. We started with one unit of Lantus insulin per day & when the blood glucose levels didn't go down as expected we had to give him the insulin 2 units per day. But we switched back to 1 unit per day when a bout of infection left him so weak and we had to force feed and put him on drips to get him to eat and bring his high fever down. It was just an infection as during that time we requested the vet to do all the necessary blood tests to check whether his kidney & liver were functioning properly as he was not responding well to the medicine & antibiotics administered as he should be. After nearly a week & a half in this state he has now made a full recovery. During that period he was not on insulin of course, and when we checked his BG it was teetering between normal to borderline.
We started to give him the insulin one unit per day again when his BG spiked up to 13 but then receded to normal fairly quickly again. I think this is because we've stopped feeding him the C/D Hill's Prescription Diet dry food which he took for his urinary tract disease. It seems that Oze is the first diabetic cat case for our vet so we're both learning in a way. Most of the information I got was from the internet; from this forum & a few others. Thanks for that.
I've only started on feeding him Innova EVO wet cat food, before that A/D Hill's Prescription Diet as we don't have really that much choice here in Malaysia for cat food that is grainless, low in carbs & high in protein. I didn't want to start feeding him Fancy Feast again as this is what he was eating before he had the UTD. The vet recommended W/D Hill's Prescription Diet but I ignored this suggestion but followed his advice on giving Oze supplements of Mega CComplex, Liv.52 & Nephtone.
I've also noticed that Addiction wet cat food is grainless so would like to know if anyone on this board is feeding this to their diabetic cat.

Are there glucose meters you can purchase at a pharmacy in Malaysia? That would give you an idea of the glucose numbers at home and would enable you to make sure it is safe to give insulin each day (avoiding a hypoglycemic situation). Also, lantus is given twice a day. By giving the dose once a day your kitty is constantly getting its insulin shed depleted and part of the next dose goes to replenishing that, so the whole dose doesn't get to work in the body. Since the numbers are borderline, you may want to try 1 unit twice a day and monitor his BG levels to see where that gets you.
