As I said in the "cats not eating" thread, I called and spoke to someone at Purina today.
First thing I told "Ashley" was that I have a diabetic cat. Then I told her that I was a member here, and I told her that many people here fed their sugarcats either Fancy Feast Classic, or Friskees Pate. I told her that we regularly advice "newbies" to do the same, and that the reason for that is because these two varieties of their food have a low carb-content. I basically gave her a crash course on Feline DB, and explained that low carb was the best thing for sugarcats. I told her that hundreds, if not thousands of diabetic cats around the world relied on FF and Friskees to help control FDB (she was not aware of any of this).
Then I told her that for the past couple of weeks, at least a dozen or two dozen people had posted that for some reason, their cats were either turning up their noses at these foods all of a sudden, or had developed things like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. That was when I asked if there had been any recent change in forumulas or ingredients. I told her that lots of people with diabetic cats were concerned, because one of the greatest issues we face is needing our cats to eat well so that we can properly manage their insulin intake thus managing the disease.
She told me that there had been no changes at all with Fancy Feast Classics, but that Friskees had recently started putting magnesium phosphate in their pate flavors.
She asked me to do one thing. She asked if I would post here and ask any and everyone who has seen symptoms which have been mentioned - nausea, diarrhea, lethargic behavior, sudden stoppage of eating, etc - to please call the Purina toll free number at 1-800-778-8864. If you do so, she asks that you save the can(s) so that when you call she can find out the lot/batch number information to see if they can trace specific problems to specific cans and dates and such.
Then she got my mailing address so that she could send me some coupons for free cans of food, which I thought was pretty sweet.
It was a good conversation. She sounded concerned and sincere. And she was thrilled to learn that Purina has a large number of loyal users that buy their product because it is good for their diabetic cats.
