I'm Vicki and my cat is Jacquelyn. This site is amazing and I hope I found you before it's too late for my kitty. She is still eating but barely ... she suddenly became blurry eyed and lethargic 2 days ago but than seemed better yesterday. She eats wet fancy feast and about two months ago vet said she's diabetic and sent my son home with insulin (I was out of town and she was peeing or pooping blood so my 19 year old had taken her to vet)

we've been giving her that teeny tiny bit twice a day. That first little mark of insulin

to be honest, I had no idea about the testing and how precarious this was. My 17 year kitty died a couple months ago from side effects of hyperthyroidism and it was sudden and gut wrenching. I really thought that's what was happening to Jacquelyn but now I have hope she might make it.
she's in bad shape
Should I give her more insulin ? I don't have any test things but will go tomorrow if she makes it through the night. Thank you
Vicki

You shouldn't give her more insulin without testing. Do you know a diabetic human who lives nearby?

Take her the vet tonight. It could be a number of things. Too much insulin. Not enough insulin (which leans toward life threatening diabetic ketoacidosis). Something else entirely.

Hi guys
She's hanging in there. Unfortunately I'm in a zero dollar situation and can't take her to vet. She's eating and drinking and my sister in law has diabetes and is helping me figure it out. I'm guessing she needs fluids. Tomorrow I will see if vet will work something out with me.

She's very lethargic still but her eyes are less fuzzy. Sometimes I rub honey on her lips when I take her blood test in a bit. What numbers am I looking for and what next.

Good morning. I tried 4 times to get a little blood to no avail last night.
This morning, just now, she got up and walked and greeted me and she just ate with an appetite. I'll find a vet this morning that will help me check her glucose. I checked mine last night to practice getting blood and make sure the meter worked ( and it was 135 after dinner and 124 this morning) I am going to go get those little poker things, lancet, maybe that will do the trick so I can get a drop of blood.

Thank you! seriously I am sooo excited cuz she's getting sassy and wanting to eat again! Heading out now between crazy weather tornado stuff to wal mart or Publix. We are in Santa Rosa beach Florida. Thank you so much. I'd send a photo but can't figure out how.

Publix had a 28 gauge lancet. . It worked. She just ate and I took test it was 295 with a ketone warning. I just gave her some insulin after eating

she just pooped. It was pretty dry.
Any advice is appreciated

Well done!
To home test you need to test before giving the doses of insulin. So the routine is test, feed then give the dose of insulin in that order.
Can you tell us what type of insulin you are giving please as it makes a difference when you give the insulin after food. Also the dose of insulin please.
Actually if you could set up your signature which is in this link HELP US TO HELP YOU and to also set up the spreadsheet to it the blood glucose data into. I’ll tag @Bandit's Mom to help you with the SS if needed.
Offer snacks during the cycles as well as the two mail meals.
What food are you feeding now?

387 BG just now after she ate before insulin. Her insulin is .... vetsulin porcine insulin zinc suspension giving her that tiny little first line. Assuming that is one unit, it's like a drop but that's what I'm understanding. She eats fancy feast and now I'm back to the pro plan DM which isn't very moist which she prefers more gravy. All of my cats like the gravy and they sometimes eat the hard food. Jacquelyn is doing awesome. She's clear green eyed and back to starving all the time and pretty much normal. Literally back from mostly dead.
Should her glucose be way lower 30 minutes after the insulin?
