Hi
My cat who is 6years old was recently Diagnosed with Diabetes and I had a couple of questions. my vet said there is a potential for him to get off insuline but for now he is on it twice a day. I wanted to know if it really mattered what brand of Diabetic food i put him on. what is weight he should be at, and how much he should be eating. rirght now I feed him 1/2 can of puriana diabeti twice a day and a handfull of dry.

Thank You
Kelly

Welcome to FDMB.

What insulin and what dose?

Are you home testing? That will help keep your kitty safe and since you are already using insulin, you should do that before making any other chances for safety reasons.

Your vet should be able to suggest a proper weight for your cat. Or look up body condition score on the web (not on my PC right now or I'd link a reference).

Over the counter, low carb, canned or raw food can work very well in reducing glucose levels by about 100 mg/dL (how the US measures glucose levels.) An inexpensive exmple is Friskies pates. Another inexpensive option is Fancy Feast Classic pates.

No dry food - most have more than 10% calories from carbohydrates which just makes controlling the diabetes more difficult.
