My cat is only 6 years old and has always been rather healthy. Monday this week, we took her to the vet because she had lost 3-4 pounds and was hiding more than usual. They tested her urine and found she was diabetic and sent us to a more capable vet. We got to the full service vet and were told her liver was failing, her BG was around 550 and she was in ketoacidosis. They also stated she would need hospitalization to be stabilized and they don't think she will be able to make it through this even if we did spend the thousands on hospital stay.

We feel like this is the end and everyone seems to agree. I wanted to post it here to see if you guys disagree.

Hi and welcome. I am so sorry you are dealing with this.
Ketoacidosis (DKA) can be a very serious illness and many vets seem to tell the owners the cat may not pull through.
But we have had many cats pull through and make a full recovery.
I don’t know exactly how unwell your kitty is but I would say give her a chance to pull through.
I would definitely not give up! With the right care she will hopefully pull through.
550 is not an alarming blood glucose numbers. Yes it is high, but many cats here have a number like that. That is not really of great concern at the moment.
Hopefully she is on an insulin drop and getting IV fluids and they are correcting her electrolytes which will be out of whack at the moment.
Once she is ready to come home….we can help you with how to look after her for the first couple of weeks after discharge.
Please let us know how she is progressing. We are here for you if you want to know anything else.

Spend the money. 6 years old is young!!! My cat is 10 years old next month and was in a similar condition, almost exactly the same actually. 2 days in the hospital and he was discharged. Yes it cost me a few grand but after he got out of there and we got him on insulin OH MY GOD the transformation. He gained weight back. His coat returned to the soft cuddly fur it once was and he started wanting cuddles, play and socialization again.

I say go for it, give kittah her best shot. If she still doesn't make it, at least you tried for her.

There have been several cats on this site that were treated and survived DKA. You know your cat best. If you feel she still has fight in her, you may want to consider having the vet treat her. Whichever you decide, your cat knows she is loved and you will do what is best for her.

Sending you my best thoughts and well wishes

At the time Gabby was diagnosed with diabetes, she was in DKA and also diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis. It was several days on the kitty ICU but she pulled through. We had 6.5 more years together.

Sorry to hear, sending you all the best and positive wishes. My Bella is newly diagnosed and wasn't feeling too great either, and she is pulling through. Do what you feel is best for your kitty. They are loved and they know that.

My kitty J.D. was hospitalized with DKA (ketoacidosis) when he was 11. He went to a University hospital. I remember him being yellow, from liver issues, which cleared up with their 24 hour care. He was there for over a week. It wasn't that expensive, especially compared to what a human would have to pay for the same treatment.
He lived for another 9 happy wonderful years.
