I've been posting in the PZI forum about my cat Eukanubo, who has been hard to regulate but was doing well otherwise, for about a week now he's been eating less and less, vomiting some, and now he's not eating at all. He is alert and moves about but simply won't eat. Xrays and his liver and kidney labs are essentially normal, other than high glucose. He is 14 years old. I'm fearful of giving insulin because he's not eating, but then his glucose readings have been very high. I've been trying token doses of 0.4 units PZI bid but it doesn't seem to affect his readings much. He did ate a little dry high carb food today which I allowed because I want him to eat SOMETHING so his glucose now is even higher.
Is there anything liquid I can give through syringe? Milk? Ensure? anything?
Thanks for your help and suggestions!

As full nutrition liquid food you can get KMR Milk Replacer, it is for kittens and sick and recovery adults.

I got it for Simba and Gustav in 2008 when they got sick and stopped eating, and mixed the formula according to the instructions for adults, and syringe fed them the full amount throughout the whole day, every day, until they started eating on their own again. I also supplemented them with fresh raw beef meat which they could eat without problem.

Eating is very imporatant in a cat. You don't want your cat to get fatty liver disease. I would send a PM to Karrie and Maverick, as Karrie has a lot of knowledge about assist feeding a cat.

Thanks!
At the suggestion of somebody in another board, I tried baby food, and it worked! He seemed hungry and relished the food, at least for the time being I'll keep trying this until he gets back on his feet.
Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your baby.
My civvie Slappy went thru the same thing. And all she ate was dry. the same dry... very picky girl.
I had a/d from the vet. I would dropper feed her, wrapped in a buritto style. She was so sick, she did not even fight much while buritto. I used babyfood and mixed with a bit of tuna water(she hates tuna). I also purchased a magic bullet from craigslist and pureed f. feast chicken. We dropper fed for a long time. After a bit, I did not even need the buritto. It took someone from the board to come to my home and assit me on exactly how to wrap her and do this, but it worked. We finally graduated from dropper to finger to spoon to bowl. I even went to olive garden and got chicken alfredo cuz she looooves it.

Eukanubo has to eat. Have you tried fora flora? Here in Texas, I have to go to the vets to get it but I found a vet that would let me buy 1 pak instead of the whole box... it worked for a couple of feedings, but it got food in her.

After all of this, I found out her thyroid was very high...meds and now she is eating me out of house and home...3-4 cans a day! ohmygod_smile

Hang in there, I am sure lots are going to offer their experiences; one of which could help mr. eukanubo.

Thanks, again for all the responses.
A little background: he was diagnosed with FD in late 2009, went into remission March 2010 by switching to Friskies Mixed Grill, was off insulin until recently. In the meantime, a year ago this time of the year got very ill with some mystery illness, stopped eating, but diabetes still in remission. He came to life when I switched his food to the Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys Chicken Strips with Garden Greens Fare (or a name like that). At first I had to feed it with a spoon, but eventually he recovered fully and had a great year. His labs, x rays, and even ultrasound were normal except for a small lymph node, too small to biopsy. He did wonderfully until he had a relapse on his diabetes, around December, was re-started on insulin in January, it's been much harder to control. I tried to go back to the Mixed Grill but he didn't want it, after trying out different foods, settled for the Fancy Feast Chicken Classic and he seemed to be doing OK on it for a while, but about a week ago, he started eating less, needing more encouragement to eat, he started having throwing up episodes that I thought was from hairballs, but then this week he stopped eating altogether. Labs and x rays have been normal, no ultrasound due to the expense, he is alert and still moves around although slowly, probably due to age (14). I almost made an appointment to have him euthanized tomorrow because I was fearing renal failure but that's when the labs came back. At the suggestion of somebody, I tried baby food chicken flavor and he is eating it up like crazy. His glucose is off the charts today because he did also nibble on some dry food from my Civvie Molly. The vet wants me to drastically increase the insulin even though he wasn't eating, because he still needs insulin, but I've been reluctant because he's dropped dramatically in the past, but I feel better about increasing the dose now that he's eating again.
The problem is, I don't think he should be eating baby food forever, what do I feed? The vet gave me some cans of the M/D wet food but I haven't tried it yet. He avidly eats the baby food but turns up his nose at his other wet food, so I'm not sure how to proceed at this point.
An interesting point is that he went through the "not eating" illness last year at exactly the same time. He is mostly an indoor cat, but sometimes he goes out under my watchful eye to my fenced in backyard, where he happily munches on grass. Last year I thought his illness was from a flea remedy but that's not the case this year, so I'm starting to wonder if he could be eating something else in the yard that 's making him sick. (I'm in Orlando, FL). Or maybe he is just being incredibly finicky just to torment me.
Any thoughts?

HB - Glad the baby food is working. I'd stick with whatever Euk will eat as long as you need to. Keep offering him the FF or Friskies, but as long as he's getting something, I'm thrilled for you!

Keep us tuned in on his progress.

Mine never been finicky just to torment me :-) they have actually been sick every time they've stopped eating, so I don't think he is doing this on purpose.

Too bad you can't afford to do any ultrasound scans, because that would be good to see if there is any organ abnormalities or growths where there shouldn't be.

Hello

He probably needs to be checked for ketones and or pancreatitis. My diabetic cat never had ketones but did have pancreatitis and did stop eating and had some vomiting.
The more experienced here can tell you how to check for ketones. They can also tell you what the signs are. I would also ask the vet for a tet for pancreatitis, fPL snap test I think it is.

Terri

The test for pancreatitis is FPLI.

Why not assist-feed him for a while? I've been doing this for a couple months myself because kitten Trinket won't reliably eat. A/D is the easiest food to syringe. You add a little water to it and suck it up into a syringe. Then you squirt it in the side of the mouth. There are videos on like - I'll see if I can find one. If you have a blender you can buy any pate food (it's easier to start with already smooth food) and blend it to the consistancy of a milkshake.

Why not also try a different mix of foods? I've never fed my cat just one kind day after day. Maybe a change in texture or flavor would help.

HB - I ran into the same problem earlier this year with Motska. I thought she was getting pancreatitis or something else, but when her bloodwork came back fairly normal (I already knew that she had beginning stage rental disease), all I could do was try different foods to see if it helped.

As it turns out, she had just decided that she didn't like Friskies Special Diet Turkey & Giblets anymore -- despite the fact that she had been happily eating it for over 6 months! So after some experimentation (I'm still experimenting a little bit), I've figured out that she will eat Friskies Special Diet Beef & Chicken.

So now I have several cans of food that she won't eat. You mentioned that you're in Orlando -- I'm in Orlando also! If you'd like several free cans of cat food to help cut down on the cost of trying different flavors, please send me a PM -- I'd be happy to let you have them. Otherwise I'll go ahead and donate them to the Humane Society here.

I have some Friskies Special Diet Turkey & Giblets, Merrick Cowboy Cookout, and a tall can of Wellness (either Chicken or Turkey, I think). I live on the south side of town (north of Hunter's Creek) and work just north of Universal -- if you'd like to meet up somewhere in-between (for the sake of convenience and privacy) to get the food, let me know.

Good luck to you!!!

I am also in Orlando.
Is it possible your kitty got himself a lizzard, or God fobid, a snake?
They are hatching just about now and are all over the place.
I have found that mine will often decide they don't like a particular flavor of the food for no apparent reason. I give them Friskies pate' but rotate the flavors between 4 or 5 different ones in order to give some variety. If you think about it, you wouldn't want to eat the same thing every day and I assume the cats don't either.
Let me know if I can help, I'm happy to do what I can.
Hugz,
Carol
