My cat cannot tolerate wet food - what can I do?

Good morning everyone!

My baby boy, Mercutio, is 12 years old and has been diabetic for about 6 years. Initially, he was on lantus - 1 unit twice a day. After about 2 years, the vet was able to decrease his insulin to 1/2 unit twice a day. And not long after that, he was able to come off of the insulin completely! Hooray!

Unfortunately, his diabetes returned about a year after he went into remission. His new vet (as I had moved) started him on Glargine, which is supposed to be the generic version of Lantus. Since then, we've had a difficult time trying to regulate his levels. He is now on 2 units twice a day, and it doesn't seem like he is getting any better. He drinks water constantly, and is still urinating quite frequently. He has now developed a habit of urinating outside of the littler box, which is not normal for him.

I did take him to the vet recently. They were not able to test his urine for a UTI (which I suspected might be the reason he has been urinating outside of the little box) but did give me the antibiotics to clear up the UTI if that was the case. He just finished the antibiotics, and is still urinating outside of his litter box.

For reference, I do his blood glucose curve at home. I am going to do it again this weekend to see where we are at before contacting the vet.

But enough of the back story - the main issue that I'm having is his inability to tolerate wet food. For his entire life, he has eaten dry food. I have tried to slowly introduce wet food by mixing just a small amount with his dry food, and he throws up almost instantly. I have tried all different kinds of wet food, and always introduced them in small amounts, and he always gets sick from them. I am currently feeding him PURINA DM dry food, as I want to feed him the best dry food possible to help regular his diabetes, but I can't help but think that if we could tolerate wet food then maybe we would finally be able to regulate his levels.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you so much!

The Purina DM is loaded with carbs, not good at all for diabetic kitties in spite of the fact that the manufacturers sell it as such! There are a couple of dry foods that are low enough in carbs to be fed to a kitty with FD; one is Evo Turkey for Cats and Kittens and the other is Young Again Zero Carb, which is only available online. I tried Evo and it made my guy's BG rise. I have given the YAZC as a treat and never had a problem with it. YACZ is expensive but it is very nutrient-dense and you only feed a small amount, so it lasts for a long time. If you contact the company they will send you a sample.

I believe there is now another dry food that is also supposed to be low in carbs, but I can't remember the name of it. Hopefully someone else on here will!

Have you tried Tiki Cat? It is canned food but it has the consistency of "people food" rather than that solid pate stuff. My cats love the chicken, I'm sure they wish they got it more often, lol.

Thank you so much for your response!

Ugh, I am beating myself up now over buying the Purina DM. I had never bought it previously even after the vet had suggested it wasn't as good for diabetic cats as they claim, but reached the point that I was willing to whatever the vet asked of me. I should have done my research first!

I will definitely give Evo Turkey or YACZ a shot! I'm not too worried about the expense, as the Purina DM is pretty pricey as it is.

No, I have not tried Tiki Cat! That sounds like it could work. I occasionally give my cat the leftovers in the tuna can, and of course he never gets sick from that...maybe the consistency does have something to do with it. I will look into Tiki Cat and see how he does.

Thank you again :)

The Tiki Cat chicken is just like shredded pieces of chicken w/broth, and the fishy ones are kind of like canned tuna. If you try one of the dry foods I recommend the YACZ over the Evo, if cost is not an issue. Check out their website, they have a whole feeding plan for diabetic cats!

My cat loves Young Again Zero carb.... They will send you a free sample if you ask them. Youngagainpetfood.com

Dr.Elsley's food is ok too... Although only 2 of my 6 would even try it. Fortunately my diabetic was one of the two that like it. They also sent a free sample when I asked.

The evo many of my cats like, but they recently changed their recipe so it went from 8% carb to 12. Bummer.

My boys love Dr Elseys as well as my fosters- (I am really trying to avoid diabetes for ANY cat!)

Mine got sick on the young again with vomit and diarrhea but many do well on it.

Right now Dr Elsey is only in chicken flavor 4.69 carbs and salmon is coming it is about 9 carbs-
