Hello Everyone,
My 8 yr old tabby, Stretch, was just diagnosed with diabetes and is still in the animal ER this weekend.
She had a horrible hair ball bowel obstruction (which they removed), has a bit more to pass yet, and is also in much distress from hepatitic lypodosis (sp?). It's touch and go right now, but she was much more responsive this morning after they started low dose insulin. Her sugar is down to around 240 now - but a bit hard to regulate as she is still not eating on her own.
Anyway, I'm off to see her again, and look forward to learning all about feline diabetes.
thanks for being here... I read the 'first diagnosis' infomation and it has already made me feel better about taking care of my special needs kitty - once she gets home (I'm thinking positive!)

Regards,
Gale

What insulin is your kitty on? Do you know the dose they started her on? What are you feeding your kitty?

You can do this! It is very manageable! I know it is incredibly overwhelming at first!!!!!

Welcome Gail,

So sorry that Stretch is not well; it sounds like the ER is the place for her to be. So you can be ready for her when she gets home, you might want to read the Health Links viewforum.php?f=14 and the FAQs http://binkyspage.tripod.com/faq.html. The good news is that 240 is not a high number for a kitty that is probably really stressed out. Ask questions. This forum can be a great support system.

It sounds like Stretch got diagnosed when they did blood work after the surgery. It is unfortunate you had to get the diagnosis this way, but it sounds like you catch the diagnosis early. That means the prognosis is better and you might have a chance of remission (also called OTJ in this forum). You can also read up on insulin and asked stretch be put on the right type before he or she leaves the hospital. As another reader already said I the 200s isn't bad. My cat was 520 when first diagnosed. He was a stray that adopted me. When I heard that number I almost fainted! Your cat is also still relatively young so the prognosis is pretty good. Good wishes and purrs. :-).

Just wondering how stretch is doing. Did they tell you what insulin they are using yet? Keep us posted and I hope you get to bring stretch home soon!

Thanks everyone for the info and the well wishes.
Saw Stretch today - she is in a very cushy ER oxygen cubicle, temperature controlled and relatively sound proof - and resting as well as she can with the feeding tube still in. They are still trickle feeding her and have increased her food intake and added stool softeners. She still has an upper GI blockage (that is probably causing her not to eat on her own.) The ER is only open on weekends, so she goes back to my regular vet tomorrow morning. I'm hoping it is not too stressful back at the regular vets office...

Not sure what kind of insulin she is getting, but I will ask.
They are bringing her numbers down very slowly, so as not to stress her too much. Especially since her liver had become 'fatty' from not eating much for about 5 days. I didn't realize cats could go into hepatic lypidosis so quickly!
I've had many cats in my lifetime, but had never heard of this before... there's always something new to learn, eh?

Off to research more about insulin and glucose meters and food, etc...

Glad you are here!
Gale

You are probably going thru the worst of it now. Managing stretches diabetes will probably be easy by comparison to this ordeal. A friend of mine had a dog shallow a toy....they scoped out some of it and some eventually passed out on it's own. Yes having pets is a learning experience. It sounds like you are both heading in the right direction. There is also some info. on fatty liver disease on this site.
