Maestro was diagnosed 1 yr ago with acromegaly, resulting in diabetes. He has steadily lost weight and was recently diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Methyl B12 has helped over this past year with hind leg neuropathy but he has severe muscle wasting in his hind legs. Is there anything that will slow that down or reverse it? His labs are posted on his spreadsheet. I am currently mixing Phos-Bind in his wet food to try and lower his blood phosphorus level and just started him on Kidney Support Gold drops. His appetite is poor; doesn’t like the Rx renal food so I’m feeding FF Classic Pate (low carbs but high phosphorus, hence the binder). I am also a member of Tanya’s Cats with Renal Failure website and support group so am gathering all the resources and collective knowledge I can to fight these horrific diseases.

I would like to know more about how to pack on some muscle, too. I read catinfo.org about weight and diet recently and Dr. Lisa said a high protein food will prevent muscle wasting to a degree, but she was talking about cats recovering from obesity, not other diseases.

How is his appetite? Will he eat more?
The blood and urine values are not that bad. The phosphorus is near the high limit and a high level make them feel bad and not want to eat. Are you feeding a low phosphorus food? Using phosphorus binder mixed with food?
The HCT is low and the lab values to not list a reticulocytes value. Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells (RBCs). Usually the body creates more RBCs in response to a low HCT/RBC count.

Maybe giving him more protein could help him recover a bit of muscle mass with time, you could add cooked egg whites (always cook them) to his food, egg whites are a very good source of high quality protein and they have almost no phosphorus
