Does anyone use the Solostar pen? I have a coupon for one pen and wanted to know what the preference is. I still have 1/2 of the 10 ML vial that Murphy got when she came home from the hospital. And, curious, how long do you all keep your Lantus? So far, her numbers are still terrific. She's very stable. She has angels!!!

And, do you buy a box of 3 pens or 5 pens?

I don't want to hijack this thread but also have a pen question-hope that's okay.
Do you need a special prescription for the pen (one that says pen/cartridge) or is just the normal lantus Rx okay?

Yes, but I think it depends on the pharmacist as to how they will handle it. My prescription was written for a vial. The pharmacy I went to then made me come back with one written for pens. My current pharmacy called and just asked the vet if it was ok to change the prescription.

Same thing happened to me, my vet wrote the scripts for Lantus pens - and the pharmacist at Target had to call her to clarify. But, also, if you need just one pen, Lantus has a coupon you can use for $25.00 off. Target's pens (each) are $43.99, so I got the pen and the needles for about $46.00 total. Worked out good. You just have to search the internet for the coupon!

The coupon works for buying just one pen - not the entire 5 pack??? I remember seeing something like that but it was first prescription so I wonder if I could even use it now?

FWIW - A pen lasts Kazi about 3 months before it starts to poop out and needs replacing. The 1st started to poop out at 3 months...and my second I used until there was little insulin left which was about 3.5 months. I had a lot of issues with air bubbles and wasted a lot of insulin because of it...I bet it would have lasted awhile longer as her numbers were still fine on the last pen.

so I got the pen and the needles for about $46.00 total.

We usually don't use the needles for the pens We use it like a small vial and draw the insulin w/ syringes. For the small doses we use, the needles in the pens is not accurate enough. You can only set the pens for full units.

Yep, if you go to Sanofi Aventis' website, you can search for the Lantus Solostar pen $25.00 off first prescription, but it is good for only one pen, and the only pharmacy I know of that will break up the box is Target. I ended up literally just about paying only for the needles.
