So, here we are today, and Murphy doesn't seem to be having many bowel movements. I talked to her vet today and she to go ahead and start giving her 1cc of lactulose each day, and begin the fluids again 150 cc per day. Anyone have experience with Lactulose with a diabetic cat? I understand it is osmotic, going straight through the gut, but just want to double-check.

Although I don't have much experience with using it for diabetic cats, I have fostered a good many special needs and it is a lot easy and "safer"(meaning a little less side effects) than some of the other medications I have used on kitties having poo issues and being a little backed up

Just my two cents worth

I know it is the diet, Evo cat and kitten is mostly protein and has very little fiber and carbs, so it would make sense that it brings out the carnivore in kitties.

That is actually what I have Dakota on and he never seemed to have an issue being constipated... Mined you he did have in the past some pretty smelly diarrhea but that cleared up with in a day

My vet's office just called and ensured me that the lactulose would not hurt her. But, just as I was writing my initial post, guess what -- she took about a 2" poopie!!! I decided to put in the pure psyllium husk, but my vet said to still give the lactulose tonight b/4 nighty night.

Well, I dont think its going to affect BGs if thats what you mean...but I found Lactulose to be a sticky mess and it would get all over Merlyn cuz he was fussing. It may have been other things going on, but it seemed like it didnt agree with his tummy either..no proof of that tho.

Many folks use Miralax, the same as for people. AKA Polyethelene glycol (Canadians have reported not finding the brand name Miralax) The beauty of miralax as opposed to lactulose, is its a powder, so you just mix in food..it is also an osmotic so it helps to add some water to the food. Start with an 1/8 tsp once a day, if that doesnt help, up it to 2x a day OR 1/4 tsp once a day. Merlyn got 1/8 2x a day. My Carly currently gets 1/8 1 time a day.

I used it for a non-diabetic geriatric cat and just mixed it in her food. No mess, no hesitation about eating it.

I also used lactulose on a non-diabetic geriatric cat and ended up with a sticky mess all over and wondering how much of the medicine he actually got. I got plain yogurt and the problem seems to be solved, although I also notice an occassion smelly poo. I have two cats now so they're both on the Activia diet because they both like yogurt!

Peace,
Kate and Tsing Yen =^:^=(GA)

I tried lactulose, it worked, but honestly it was just a sticky mess. I switched to miralax and it worked out great.

When Tucker gets constipated we use Miralax, I prefer it because it's odorless, tasteless and dissolves completely in water. I taste tested it to make sure.

The Lactulose is too sticky for our liking, Tucker ends up with it all over his fur. Add extra water to the food even if you're not using Miralax or Lactulose, it will help with constipation. Dehydration in senior kitties is common, that can lead to constipation. I add extra water to the canned food to help prevent it.

I'm not a vet or expert, this is just from my experience with adopting mainly senior kitties.
