MURPHY -- IT CAN'T BE, BUT I THINK IT IS 417 DINNER

Well, of course, I'm nervous as could be you all. I checked Murphy an hour after she ate and her BG was 417. Is this a serious number? I'm so concerned? I'm going to start charting again, until we figure this stuff out. I'm afraid my worst fear has come. Is it possible that the thyroid treatment and revealing the CRF is just too much endocrine for my girl? Her numbers were never this high, even at the beginning of her diabetes Dx, she was in the low 200s. What should I do? She isn't exhibiting the typical chronic urine and drinking thing, so it's hard to tell if something is masking the other. But, I cannot stand the N/F diet for renal. There must be hardly any protein in it at all. I knew it -- just knew it -- when I saw that little darned mite coming back.

She's going to the vet's office tomorrow to get a fructosamine test and scrape for the mite, and we'll probably run another full panel on her. She didn't have glucose in her urine last time, so what's up? If this is the case, then it happened very suddenly with her BG.

I'm frightened, very frightened. Is this number so high that I should be worried tonight? How can I manage CRF and diabetes all in one?

i haven't read the latest on her but one thing for sure, a high number for a day is not anything to panic over. yes, something is to be done and soon but there is no need to panic over that number tonight. get her into the vet as you plan, reconsider the food if it's too high in carbs, and maybe restart insulin (if she was off it?) as needed.

Hi Lisa,
I agree with what Cindy just said... The 417 tonight is not a crisis. Cause for concern for sure, but if she's going to the vet tomorrow, then she'll be okay tonight. There are a lot of people here who are dealing with, or have dealt with CRF and diabetes at the same time. They just may not have seen your previous post yet. Holly did reply and provided a great link for CRF info. If you have time tonight, reading some of those will give you a list of questions to ask the vet tomorrow...

This is really scary for me, and I'm sure you can all understand why. She's my little bubble baby and with all the other health problems in the past, this is hard to take on. She didn't even have that high of a number before we started her insulin.

If I have to start insulin again, and I suppose I will, will the Purina N/F diet interfere since it has such low protein? N/F would probably be great for a hypo kitty, but not hyper.

Either way, I'm so upset -- I've had her stabilized for over one year, and then this. My vet says, it's a choice of kidneys or sugar and treat the kidneys. I just don't know what to think.

It's the carbs in the N/F that are the issue with the diabetes. 23%? There are foods that fit into a happy medium balancing the FD and CRF needs. I'm trying to find a link for you to look at.

The one that Murphy likes the most if the Cowboy Cookout by Merrick, and it's low glycemic. I think you are all right with this. She is so early on that her glucose is a real factor right now b/c so many things can go bad. With the N/F, she is always hungry! I just knew as soon as I saw that darned mite on her nose, that something was amiss. Now, I cannot say she will need insulin, I suppose I'll have to watch, but that N/F is a horrible diet, and I'm very pro Purina vet diets. Murphy's old vet said to always stick to maybe less than 7% carbs.

What a sticky situation! Lisa
