Murphy - Further Update 10/31/11 Inappetance

Hi all. Although Murphy is still off insulin, I think this post is related to diabetes. I just talked w/ her vet and she said that of all the things, we would have never thought that she would need an appetite suppressant. I've reached the point where I have to get food down her whenever I can during the day. Tonight, I broke down and gave her some dry food. I had to -- we have to get her over this hump, but I'm concerned about the dry food and the fact that she was already diabetic. What say you all to this approach just to get her to eat? I think there is more to this situation than I know about -- she was really traumatized and I'm not sure how to fix this. I suppose being alone all day and all night with only two visits every 12 hours would make anyone have problems. I just don't want her going into diabetes again, but I have got to keep her liver out of this situation. I look forward to your comments.

She must eat. And if all she will eat is the dry, then you don't have much choice. Yuck, hate to say that.
Maybe mix wet and dry to minimize the effect?
At least you are familiar with the effect, and you can keep a close eye on her BG...

You mean appetite stimulant, right?

Could she have pancreatitis again? I think I saw that she had that before. Could also be triaditits which ieffects the pancreas, intestines and liver - inflammation can easily spread from one to another as they are all connected.

Foods that I had success with when Beau had pancreatitis attacks - some severe - were chicken, ham and turkey baby food (meat only versions), boiled chicken breast and plain Greek yogurt - low fat, but not fat free (tastes better) gently warmed to room temp. I gave him Pepcid AC followed by the yogurt about 20 mins before attempting to feed him. I did have to syringe feed him at times.

It is best to get blood work and a thorough exam to rule out other things like constipation, intestinal blockage, intestinal lymphoma, parasites, etc.

Paws crossed for her. Are you back on your feet now?

Murphy's labs were excellent, so we are not dealing with a triaditis situation. We think it is the stress she underwent without my being around and the fact that I was gone for such a long time, and also the fact that her pet sitter would just let her eat whatever amount and then take up her food. Today she is better and seems to be calmer. She is now sleeping above my head on her little pillow and is urinating normally now. Keep your fingers crossed -- I will do whatever I can to get her to eat and have also ordered feliway and we may give her a small dose of appetite stimulant to get her over this hump.

I am having a horrible time with my mothers dog right now, she has been in the nursing home for about 3 months now. I can not get him to eat. I go sit with him for sometimes up to an hour a day. I have tried every kind of food known to man. He has as we speak about four different kinds of food out over there.
I have even fried up hamburger once he did eat that, but can not afford to do that all the time. My own cat Lilly, FD has had pancreatitis recently and is now on an appetite stimulant.
You might talk to the vet about putting her on one until she gets to feeling better and knows your going to stay home. Also did not you say you just moved? If so that could have something to do with it as well.

Murphy ate one entire can of food today! yeah! And, I started looking at Oscar, and I think now I know what happened. Oscar's food is usually left out on the counter top because he is a grazer, always has been, and he mostly eats at night. The sitter was taking up her food twice per day if she wasn't going to eat. Darn it! So, thus the almost 4 pound weight loss. Once I took a look at Oscar, he seemed literally unphazed by the entire 8 weeks we were apart! Anyways, I had my aide go purchase a scale for me today. And, low and behold, Murphy has gained .9 ounces since Friday of last week. It's a bit of a coercing her to eat at the moment, and there appears to be some sort of disconnect between her and the food, but we will get there, just like every other time. The good thing is that I came home in the nick of time.

God is good.

Glad she is eating - poor thing. If you and the vet think that the appetite thing is behavioral, and it doesn't go away as she learns that you are home and not leaving her, you could consider a short course of prozac. It might help. I have Jeddie on it for innapropriate peeing and excessive grooming. I got him two years ago after he was removed from the only home he ever knew at the age of 10. It was really hard on him. I did try feliway and rescue remedy, but they didn't work very well. The prozac did. Just keep it in mind.

Terri, your Lilly looks just likemy Beau!

We're going to try a short course of cyproheptadine for a little while, just so she can start eating more than what she is throughout the day.
