Hello all, I have missed you all so much. We are happy to say that as of 4/11/13, Murphy has been off insulin for two ENTIRE years. But, disappointingly enough, she is almost 3rd stage renal failure. I am here because I want to know if there are other diabetic kitties dealing with renal failure as I am running out of options for feeding her (i.e., renal diet (K/D Hill's, vs. higher protein diet). This is a sensitive issue for me as I have been checking her glucose intermittently and as long as I'm adding some other source of quality protein to the K/D, her glucose appears to stay within normal range. Otherwise, feeding just K/D, she will spike into the 200s. I don't want to test the waters too much to throw her back into the need for insulin, but am feeling like adding the higher protein is going to hurt her little kidney beans more.

I suppose I just need some support on the decisions I'm making. I think having a diabetic renal kitty would be disastrous for Murphy considering all of her other previous health conditions.

Her pancreatitis is no longer, nor is her iatrogenic Cushing's. Otherwise, we are dealing with diet.

Lov and miss all, Lisa and Murphy

Dr Pierson has a food list at Cat Info which includes the phosphorus numbers. You want to keep those low, while providing low carb nutrition.

Tanya's CRF website has lots of info on feline renal disease, too.

Trying the lower phos foods would be a good start. My diabetic kitty Brie also has CKD. His kidney numbers have been pretty good. He's getting fluids every other day and that really helps keep his numbers down. His phos has been running 2.9 to 4. Right now I'm still feeding him the ff classics but I've been thinking of switching to wellness. Brie also has cancer and now issues with constipation. We've had a bit of medical going on so I haven't switched his food yet. How is Murphy's appetite. A lot of CKD kitties have very poor appetites. When Bookmark(GA) was with us I would just offer him a variety of foods. Book wasn't diabetic. He would never eat the renal diets. Since you've dealt with pancreatitis you probably have dealt with inappetance. Hopefully this is not the case with Murphy.
