I'm confused on the food issue with my vet's nutritionist. I'm feeding Murphy the Evo cat and kitten wet food - OMG she scarfs it up! Loaded with good stuff and she's doing much better on the low, low carb diet. The nutritionist wants me to feed her 1.25 cans twice per day - wow, so I prepared it last night, and it appears to be soooo much food. But, she ate it all. Is there something about eating more wet food (high protein) that will sustain her BG numbers during the day? It just seems like a ton of food!

Good morning. What a nice am number!

The theory is that an unregulated cat is literally starving, as their bodies don't process food well. IMHO, if she is not overweight, I would say you can feed her what she will eat. You don't however, want her to become overweight. If we are talking the large cans (not the fancy feast size) that sounds like quite a bit of food. I feed 2 cans of FF a day to a 7 pound cat who is not terribly active. The idea of feeding several small meals during the day and night is what will help even out the bg levels.

They are 5.5 oz cans and come in a case of 24. I think it's just too much food twice per day. If I feed her half a can twice per day, I would feel better about that. I don't want her feeling bloated and full and having a pancreatitic issue again (if that would happen).

I have been hiding the dry food (just a little plasty baggie of it) in a make-up bag of mine that I use in the morning, and this a.m., Murphy was trying to open the zipper to get the dry kibbles!!!

all my cats eat 6oz fancy feast daily. so that's just a little more than a 5.5 oz can.
i don't think i'd be feeding my cats 13.75oz canned food a day even if they needed to gain weight. (normally you put weight on or take it off in moderation rather than all at once.)

we just had this discussion on another thread on health, where one person said she had to feed even more than that til her cat was better regulated, so obviously there are exceptions.

wonder if the nutritionist misspoke and really meant 1.25 cans total a day instead of twice a day? it happens...

Actually, I think it's me being nutso from all of this. Murphy will get .75 can (5.5 oz) a.m. and the same in the p.m., for a total of 1.5 cans per day. Makes more sense, huh?

She's doing well so far. Her numbers are sticking in the mid-100s!
