My cat, approx. age 12 yrs diagnosed 4 years ago. On Prozinc 1 to 2 units 2x per day depending on reading. Was fairly well controlled, but about 8 months ago my cat started with diarrhea and also refused to eat her Young Again zero dry cat food. Will only eat fancy feast or Sheba pate. Vet had no answer except to prescribe science diet diabetic dry food, which seemed to maker her worse! I feel like dry food helps lessen the water content in her stool. Any other grain free I’ve tried seems to help (Dr.Elsey, and some other random one) but they cause her blood sugar to increase 80-100 pts!!

I am frequently gone for 8-10 hours, and on random days I will come home and her glucose reads at 54 to 60 Which terrifies me!!! I feel like we’re son a see-saw as she needs the Prozinc, but I’m so afraid her glucose will go too low while I’m away. Plus the diarrhea is making her (and us) uncomfortable. Thanks for any insight. (She is a tiny cat, not tall, not long, maybe 7 lbs). Averaging 280 - 360 With an outlier of 68, and one at 472.

Hi and welcome to the forum.I see you joined in 2019 but only posted one thread.

Fancy Feast pates or Sheba are perfectly ok foods to feed PNut. Do you have an issue with them.
If you are gone for 8 to 10 hours have you thought about a timed automatic feeder to put food into so that PNut has access to food while you are gone?
Do you feed snacks during the day as well as the preshot meals?

I can see your spreadsheet but there is no data entered on it.

The wet food is definitly better for her so let her eat it. If you need to bulk up the stool consider putting a little plain pumpkin in the food ((0.5-1 teaspoon).

A spreadsheet would really help. Can you enter the data for the last few weeks so we can advise on dose? ProZinc is dosed based on how low the cat goes, not on the preshot, so it seems your need a reduction of your are seeing Lows like that.

Thank you both Bron and Janet,

I haven’t been keeping a very good schedule due to my job shifting schedules and a second job recently I need to get back on track with that. I get so scared :nailbiting: of her going low that I go ahead and give her her morning dose because she’s usually high but then I find myself hiding treats in her usual spots hoping she’ll find them later in the day to even out the lows. I just checked on Amazon and there’s some timed feeders that I could potentially do.
I do have a second cat though who might eat it.

I keep a dish of dry food out, but she’s not that interested in it -she used to eat young again zero and will not touch it now. I bought a “grain free” dry food but that seems to be making her blood sugars go up. She has large urine balls in the clumping litter so I’m certain she’s too high currently.

My main reason for wanting her to have the dry is one, to try to firm up her stool from the diarrhea she’s had for about a year now, and also for her to be able to have food if I have to go away for a couple days which of course is a whole issue in itself. I actually took her with me on a plane for a five day trip because I didn’t have anyone I could trust with her insulin.
I will give the pumpkin a try for the diarrhea. I get tired of opening can after can of wet food, between the two cats it’s easily 3-5 cans per day, and can never be away more than a day. I think I have caregiver burnout (I also have a chronically lame horse and an older horse with digestive issues). I love them SO much, but none of their conditions will resolve, it’s just a constant effort to hold steady.

I can’t figure out the spreadsheet but here’s a bit:

Many find a timed feeder helpful.

Can you get some mid cycle tests on days home? A before bed test would help too. Since ProZinc is based on how low they go you will want to get that data.

Hi @SueL, welcome to FDMB! :-) I see you have a spreadsheet in your signature with a few days from 2019. How can I help you with bringing it up to date with the latest data you have shared in your above post?
