Hi all!

He hit his first 60! He did not snack before I left the house because it was too early (as he normally does) and when I got home at +7 he was at 60. Lesson learned, I thought I was going to be back at +4 and planned on having him snack at that time but only got home at +7.

I fed him some Orijen Kat and Kitten mixed with his w/d (which I will be phasing out of his diet completely once I finish the open product)

I discovered this Orijen food today while shopping, on the bag says limited glycemic load of 4.68/100g - I don't know what it means in carbs BUT I bought a very small 340g bag for this type of scenario. Came in handy right away.

I was looking for EVO or Young Again as it seems to be the choice on this forum but didn't find any so I did some research in the store but got overwhelmed and grabbed this and came home.

I also discovered now that I bought the PREVIOUS formula.. but here is what it is.

PLEASE Comment on if you think this food is good on occasion or if I should continue my quest for EVO and/or Young again OR any other kibble I could use in SMALL quantity to make my Mr Pou happy.

And FYI this food makes him react like catnip! Also he hasn't seen dry food in a week!

Tested about 40mins after and he's at 85 now (almost +8)

Posting this and I will add his blood and urine test results to this thread shortly.

Thanks for the input!

There's a formula for calculating the % carbs "as fed" for various foods but I don't have it at my fingertips. You could post a new thread with a question mark asking for that.

"Young Again Mature Zero" is the low carb dry food mentioned often here. It's from the US and is not available in Canada You'd have to order online, pay a large shipping fee and take a chance that it doesn't get confiscated at the border.

Orijen makes excellent freeze dried meat treats that might be something you could use as a diabetic friendly kibble snack. They're available at Global Pet Foods here in Ottawa. They come in a variety of flavours and Teasel loves them. They're my injecting/ear pricking reward treats.

Your hypo number today will mean a drop in dose tonight. They can also stay more sensitive to insulin for a few cycles after a very low number because they've exhausted some/most of the supplies of glycogen in the liver in trying to prop up their blood glucose at a too high dose.

The Blood and Urine analysis was uploaded. It was a little complicated cause my tests we're in french and I had to figure out what everything meant and then translate to English lol!

@Kris & Teasel perfect, I went to the new Global in Gatineau today, that's where I bought the small bag. So the meat treats are next on the list.
I purchased 10 different fancy feast cans today, we will gradually integrate those into the diet and phase out the w/d (if FF is not for him I am considering Wellness or Hound and Gatos or something like that) I don't mind paying the 2$/can but many people use FF so I'll give it a go.

His allergic reaction is back and worst than while on RC urinary SO. I suspect there is something similar in the w/d? But who knows if its even food related. Maybe its not even an allergy?... He's back up to 13.9 now.

@Sue and Oliver (GA) can you explain what a bounce is? Did I do something wrong? I fed him a FF with 5cs this morning and that's it. I know his BG is high cause his ears are super warm. Also do the Labs look ok to you?

Thanks!

Everyone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I'd take a stab at explaining for Jamie.

Bouncing is what we call it when the liver releases glycogen to counteract a perceived low blood sugar event. I say perceived, because if they've been diabetic for a while (which many cats are because they hide illness so well and diabetes is usually a progressive disease not a sudden one) their bodies are used to an abnormally high blood sugar.

Basically the blood sugar drops, the liver reacts by releasing glycogen into the blood and raises the blood sugar. It's a short(ish) term effect, not a steady one and it can last hours or a few days. We typically don't like to raise a dose for a bounce without enough data to show how your cat reacts to the insulin and the bounce.

Really hopeful - and also feel so bad I missed his snack time, it threw everything off! LESSON LEARNED.
