Mr.Cat's BG is 154 on his OTJ Trial Day 2!!

Its one number. Relax. It could be the stress of going to vet, could be possible UTI, give him a chance to bring the bg down on his own.

I would not give insulin, I would wait until tomorrow morning, test again and see what that tells you....step away from the meter and the insulin!
 
As one whose cat had a few highs in the otj trial.... I agree.
Wait and see.
You can test and feed.... and then test again 3-4 hours later to see if the bg drops as it should to indicate if the pancreas is working.

Some cats can really stress from a car ride/vet visit....
 
OK. I'll wait before giving insulin. It's hard to do, though! I have been so accustomed to his low numbers. I just fed him after the +10 reading and I'll test him again at +12.
Also, the vet is doing some dental work on Mr.Cat tomorrow (stomatitis) and will extract teeth. She's also doing a BG curve. So... I'm nervous that Mr.Cat's BG will go through the roof!

I agree with the others...it's one number so just feed and retest in three hours and see if he brings his BG down.
 
Mr. Cat has some car ride stress,
BG numbers not looking their best,
keep that trial going and we will see,
if Mr. Cat will be footloose and insulin free!

It's too early to call this trial a failure. Give it the full 14 days and see what happens.
I'd expect the numbers to be high after the vet visit too. And that dental may throw the numbers off. Be patient.

ETA: Would you remove the 911 from your first post. I think Mr. Cat is doing ok.

just curious - is it really necessary for the vet to do a curve? It's going to cost you and not give you real numbers, especially if he is having a dental, personally, I'd save my money on the curve.. that's my 2 cents.
 
Arghgh on the vet visit and the dental timing - of course those are stressful. So you know those will cause his numbers to fluctuate. Listen to everybody who has said to stick with the trial and relax! You and I both know that's not easy but you can do it. I actually went the whole day without testing Elian today. We can do this - especially with all of our wonderful supporters!
 
Thanks, Susie. You are absolutely right. It's tough to relax but I'll do my best! Mr.Cat is resting peacefully on the couch now. Hopefully, we'll see his numbers go down in a few hours. Thanks again for the support! I'm not much of a drinker, but if I were, this would be the time for a glass of wine!

Didn't your mom or dad tell you (or haven't you told your own children) "don't run with scissors!" ? That was pretty good advice, so....

Move away from the sharp objects. Put down the hokey-pokeys. (nice job today, by the way, Susie! The first day of only 2 tests is a big hurdle ;-) )

I see a couple of kitties going OTJ here.

One number is just a number, Jess. My money is on "stress". Come to think of it, you could have checked your own BG and it was probably a little high after you saw the 154. ;-)

Throughout all of this, there's only one "one number" that really mattered. That's when you saw a number under 50. Because that number meant you really needed to "do something" going forward. Other than that, all the numbers are are data points on a spreadsheet.

Y'all are just going to have to accept that your dancing days are pretty much over. :mrgreen:
 
Hillary - thanks for the advice. You're right. A vet curve would probably give false numbers. I'll ask them about the cost and if it's too high, we'll skip it.

and if you do the vet curve - and the vet gets higher than normal numbers, and says, hmmm you need to give insulin - what are you going to do - besides freak out....best to not have vet test - test him yourself before leaving for vet and then don't test until next morning, after bringing him home.....that's my suggestion
 
I tested Mr.Cat 3 hours after his 154 reading (and 3 hours after food). His BG was 112. Whew! Thanks to everyone for talking me off the ledge! :-D
