Hello everyone we heard about this forum from the Diabetic Cats in Need Organization. We rescued a 10 year old black cat October of 2017. He was 23.5 lbs. We had parented cats before and knew he was overweight. We took him to a Veterinarian and she confirmed what we had feared. He has type 2 diabetes. We have been helping him loose weight, he's down to 15 lbs. He's on Vetsulin twice a day, 5 units. He's doing well is happy and playful. We are looking for ways to manage his Diabetes. We are hoping to get him to remission. Our last furry baby was 24 years young when she passed away. She had one kidney but lived a healthy and happy life. We're hoping to get sweet Mr. Bateman to good health.

Hi and welcome to FDMB. We would like to help Mr. Bateman to better health and well being, and help you to find ways to manage his diabetes. Just like treating human diabetics there are three main components of effective treatment for cats: proper diet, insulin therapy and blood glucose testing. We can help by providing information on a good diet for a sugar cat, why we recommend testing blood sugar at home and help you learn more about the insulin you are using.

You can take a look at the Vetsulin forum HERE for further education about that insulin. When you start a new thread in the Main Health forum HERE, more members can review and respond to your questions and concerns, provide suggestions based on what worked on their journey and give you support as you go forward. :cat:

Please tell us when he was diagnosed diabetic and how long he has been getting 5 U of Vetsulin twice a day, what you are feeding him and if you are currently home testing his blood sugar.

Welcome to a great community of very experienced and knowledgeable folks. You have taken the first step in helping Mr. Bateman get healthy again. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need, its the only way to learn. Its a steep learning curve but we will help you along the way.

Btw, please remove the GA prefix on your thread header. GA= gone ahead. I'd hate for members to think you lost your cat.

That is exactly what I thought, “oh no they just posted on the intro forum so recently, what happened?!”

I must say, getting your cat’s weight down by 8.5lbs is quite impressive! Good work there already!!!!
