My home computer crashed last week & has been sent away for repairs! Today is a quiet day at work, so I thought I would post a quick update!

After several attempts at getting some labwork done at the vet's office (the first 3 tries he did not have any urine available!), we were finally able to get everything done last Monday Aug 23. I was given the results yesterday & things are looking good! His fructosamine is down to 382 umol/L (was 480 in Sept '09 & 486 in Dec '09) which is slightly higher than the ideal range of 191-349. Even better news...his fPL is 1.9 ug/L!! That is in the ideal range & definately a lot better than back in Feb '10 when it was 14.0!!!! My vet also checked out his thyroid levels as that can sometimes be an issue with FD apparently - his tetraiodothyroine is fine at 18.0 mmol/L (ideal 16.0 - 45.0). The other results that have been flagged as not being in the ideal range include: glucose 16.8 mmol/L (ideal 4.0 - 8.0), chloride 110 mmol/L (ideal 111 - 125), albumin 36 g/L (ideal 23 - 33), calc osmolality 316 mmol/kg (ideal 285 - 314), mean corp HGB 12.6 pg (ideal 13.5 - 17.3), and MCHC 303 g/L (ideal 306 - 352). Everything else is fine! The vet who called with the results yesterday (my vet is on vacation right now), said that these results look quite good for Morris! She said the glucose may have been out of whack due to 'vet stress' and having to make so many trips to the vet office this past week before being successful at getting the labs drawn!

Now that the labwork has been done, I have reduced Morris' dose down to 2.00u. I have not updated his spreadsheet with his BG readings as I don't have the meter here at work with me, but he has been doing fine. I am not sure if I will have time to do a curve on him this weekend, but if not will definately make it a priority for next weekend (I would like to get a curve done with the new dose & see how things are doing).

All of his P's have been in perfect working order lately!

Even though Morris' labs are good enough for him to have a dental done, I am not sure that I will be scheduling that. My husband is taking the 'Look at how well he is doing these days! He is a completely different cat as compared to a year ago! Why not just leave well enough alone! Continue with the insulin, but not to worry about everything else. Morris is 12 years old - he is never going to be a 20+ year old, he probably only has another 2 years or so.....leave him alone!' attitude! Maybe he is right, to a point. It doesn't appear that his teeth are bothering him, so maybe having a dental done is just asking for problems (especially with him having that arrythmia). My vet also seems to think that Morris could be stricken with arthritis anytime now as well. Perhaps it is just time to let him enjoy life once again! Maybe I should just continue with his diet, insulin & BG checks and not worry about anything else.

    Hi Gwen!
So happy to see the report on Morris' bloodwork! I don't know much about the values and all but it is good news that his thyroid is good....
And yes, the glucose usually is raised with vet stress....
And congratulate Morris on his dose reduction!!! yay!

Oh, and as far as the dental is concerned, I have brought Shadow in for 2 this past year. He seems to get a lot of plaque and I notice that his numbers get wonky but after the dental, he evens out. If there is any inflammation or infection, it is good to have that work done. I know what bad teeth feel like myself and don't wish that on my kitties....BUT, having said that, I understand that you are concerned about the arrythmia. I guess your vet could speak to this issue....I am not sure what the vet would do in this case.
My two are 13 years old now...older than your Morris...there are many who live for 18-20 years and that's what I am hoping for myself...

It would be great if you can fit in a few extra tests this weekend even if you don't do a formal "curve"...and mid cycle tests would still be great to see! I hope your computer feels better soon...will look for your next posting....Hope you have a good weekend Gwen!

glad to hear about the good results on the labwork! I guess I am confused on the fructosamine levels .. I mean, not just for morris, but isn't the range of 191-349 allowing a cat to be on the high side? I remember when mocha was first diagnosed by that test back in may of last year and it was I believe, 387 and the vet acted as though it was out of this world. Oh well .. one of life's mysteries .. just glad to hear morris is doing good ...
