Had nearly an hour and a half of instructions and signing of paper work, but that's Morky home!

He's been hiding under the bed since I brought him home. I decided I was going to try and get a glucose test from him, and instead wasted 13 lancets. I officially hate the accuchek multiclix lancet pen, lol. I was too good at priming it shooting it without having a cat nearby. So I'm out of lancets at the moment and I feel terrible about trying to poke him again, so he'll get a wee break while I order some more lancets off the web. (Popped into a pharmacy and as they would usually be free with a prescription on the NHS, if you buy them without a prescription, they're really expensive)

He's also overgrooming something terrible, seems he just chews his back legs until they bleed (I briefly considered attempting a sample from there, thought better of it). Poor wee pet! He's on Zylkene and Clomicalm for that at the moment, just didn't notice it when he was at the shelter, so hopefully getting settled will help.

For now, just letting him rest and popping in there to talk to him and give him love if he needs it. I will get more pictures going when he's a bit better settled, but he is an absolute babe. Once I'm able to start testing, I'll start getting numbers up, just need more lancets first. And a rice sock.
 
MORKY'S HOME!!! I'm crying again! Welcome home sweet boy! Mama's been SO excited for days and days.

The grooming may be nerves or something they did to get him ready for his new home leaving a smell. Might be an allergy but I know you'll figure it out...

Extra headbutts to both of you. I can't wait to see pictures!
 
Wonderful! He's home! You are such a great person to take him into your heart.

I never reused any syringes, but I would use one lancet per session, even if it took 4 (or more) attempts to get blood. And if you hate the pen, try lancing freehand. Others will come along to advice you on freehand technique. Don't forget to warm his ear. Also smear a very small amount of vaseline on the spot (it helps the blood to bead up) and be sure to have something firm behind his ear. I used a paper towel folded up to a small square. It gives you something to press against, keeps you from pricking yourself, and you can use it to put pressure on the spot after the test. This reduces bruising.

And remember, he might be scared to be in a new place, so give him some time to realize he's got a forever home.

Many thanks everyone! I'm just beyond pleased he's home! He is such a doll, but we've got some work to do. I'm into the vet tomorrow for my insulin shot lesson and I'm going to mention him walking on his hocks and ask about Methyl 12, he's definitely unsteady on his back legs and walks fully on his hocks.

Yeah, I hate the pen, lol and the multiclix all come in a drum, so they can't be accessed individually. They even have a countdown system on the pen, just to highlight your failure, haha!! Complete shambles, but I'm not disheartened or even worried, better lancets ordered, sorted! Definitely open for tips for free handing it.

Ah, just feels good to have him home. Sure I mentioned, I had a one year old kitten pass away back in June, he was my wee man, and his little heart went, left the house with a healthy cat, came back an hour later to nothing but a shell. Nothing can replace wee George, but bringing Morky home, knowing that he is so deserving of a good home, just feels good.

And I can't say enough to everyone here, sending hints, tips, well wishes and love our way. <3
 
He might be biting his legs from diabetic neuropathy - read up on methly-B-12 for it as it might be helpful for him. I believe Xobaline is one of the brands available online.
 
No walmart I'm afraid! But ebay has been a gift! got a few lancets off the vet so I've been able to poke him and do a few tests. He was at 28.6 this morning before his insulin jag and he's 11.6 just now, so not sure if he's too low to shoot, particularly cause he's at 4 units. So gonna leave it a wee while and see!

The vet was quite pleased for me to be testing him at home, so that's great news! So far going really well, and he's a good wee bleeder!
 
So glad he is home.

Another word about the lancets. I was using 28 gauge Freestyle free hand and they were fine but I saw Micro Thin Lancets (33 gauge) and thought those would be better for kitty. Not so --they bend easily and I can't use them at all. Maybe they would work in a pen but I have not mastered those yet--I can't hit the very edge of the rim of the ear like I can doing it freehand. (study the ear with a flashlight and you can see where you can test plus I use a leather thimble so I don't poke myself)
