I raised mom-mom's shot finally last night from 2 to 2.25. She is at +9 and is 33. I gave her Fancy Feast WITH gravy. Is there anything else I should do for her right now ???

She ate the food and is now a 48. I will be home all day with her to keep a close eye anyway. It scared me for a minute.

Re: Mom-mom at 33 !!!!!

OK, just checked your SS...

Mom-Mom sometimes drops late on into the cycle, so you're not 'out of the woods' yet.
You do need to get her BG up higher.

Test her now to see if her BG is coming up after that gravy.
If no improvement, then you may want to give a few drops of karo/honey/syrup in a small amount of gravy.

Re: Mom-mom at 33 !!!!!

Just saw your updated SS, Laura.

Am I right in thinking that you're not using Alphatrak?

That 48 is looking a whole lot better.
She may continue to come up on her own now. But you will need to check her again in, say 15 to 20 minutes.

Ideally, it's good to see 3 rising numbers in succession.

If she drops again, then give more gravy.

Saw you've just edited/updated your first post.

That was a good catch, Laura. Well done.

But DO check again in a little while just to make sure Mom-Mom's BG isn't dropping again...

Thank you Elizabeth for getting back to me sooo quick. Have a Blessed Day

Hi Laura,

Mom-Mom is getting too much insulin. She needs to be dropped to 1.75. On June 19th she was getting 2.0 units and she got to 40 - that means that 2.0u is too much.

Can you reduce her to 1.75u, please?

Glad she was ok today, but it's important for you to reduce her dose now.

It's hard to wrap your head around, but sometimes high numbers are CAUSED by low numbers. That's one thing that is going on with her right now. Her body is fighting against going too low, and it's causing her to have high blood sugar.

Elizabeth, Laura is using a human glucometer.

Hi Laura,

Glad to hear to caught such a low value on time, but please follow Julie's advice and decrease Mom Mom's dose.

Have a nice day!
Cristina

Laura:

You need to reduce Mom-mom's dose.

From the Tight Regulation sticky:

Reducing the dose:

If kitty drops below 40 (long term diabetic) or 50 (newly diagnosed diabetic) reduce the dose by 0.25 unit. If kitty has a history of not holding reductions well or if reductions are close together... sneak the dose down by shaving the dose rather than reducing by a full quarter unit. See additional notes in the next paragraph about drops into the 20s and 30s. Alternatively, at each newly reduced dose... try to make sure kitty maintains numbers in the normal range for seven days before reducing the dose further.

Please do not let yourself become complacent or blasé about drops into the 20s or 30s.
  • If kitty drops into the 20s, a full reduction of 0.25u (or 0.5u if kitty is on a higher dose) is strongly recommended.
  • If your cat drops into the 30s, a full reduction of 0.25u is recommended. There are very few exceptions given for caregivers who have collected years of data and KNOW their cat's response to the combination of insulin and food backwards, forwards, and inside out.
  • Caregivers whose kitties have "High Dose" conditions may find the need to reduce in whole units or more.
  • Please ask for advice.

If anyone suggests otherwise, they are putting your cat at risk! Our kitties are not just numbers. They are living beings who trust us to look out for them. The TR Protocol is an aggressive method in itself. The modified version of the protocol is slightly more aggressive.

Keeping YOUR cat safe is the #1 priority of the FDMB.
Let's keep all our kitties in the Lantus Tight Regulation ISG safe by suggesting and taking appropriate reductions.

If you are not going to post regularly and not respond to comments in your condo then you MUST become familiar with the Tight Regulation Protocol and follow the instructions regarding dose reductions. Not reducing Mom-mom's dose after a drop into the 30s is putting Mom-mom at risk.
