I took Mollie for her curve check today and they raised her insulin to 4 units in the morning and 2.5 at night. I am nervous about this since I have not been able to home test. Haven't been able to get any blood out of her ear for the last couple of months not for lack of trying. I don't get to talk to the vet when I take Mollie in for her checks for whatever reason. The vet assistant gives me the new dosage number. She said her numbers were 560, 488 and 380 today. She said it could be her diet since they are keeping her on a renal diet for her kidneys, they said it may require more insulin. Just nervous about it. I will be starting 12 hour work days Monday so won't be home to watch her.

Welcome to FDMB.

What insulin are you using? Some insulins work best if given in equal doses every 12 hours.

See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for additional assessments you can make to evaluate Mollie. In particular, measure water drunk and urine ketones and glucose. Thirst, hunger, and urination are likely to decrease as you get better control.

Prozinc.

That's a good insulin for cats - it often lasts about 12 hours per shot.

Here are our ProZinc Guidelines. I know with the new 12 hour schedule, you'll have to tweak times a bit; just do the best you can with testing. Snag mid-cycle tests on days off, or even an occasional test in the middle of the night (a big glass of water may wake you up to do it!)

Hi Julie. I don't know if it would work for you but some people use the paw pad as an alternative testing site, might be worth a try.

I'm curious as to why you never get to talk to your vet. That seems like an unhappy situation in the making. If she is too busy maybe she could have you scheduled for a longer appointment to include some time to discuss Mollie's on-going treatment, or just schedule one for you to come in and talk to her?
