Miss two doses, or shoot blind 2 doses?

Okay... so I just booked a crazy weekend trip - long story. Something like a Lifetime movie, with a couple high school crushes who get back in touch after 20yrs and... yeah... we'll see.

ANYWAY... it's just a weekend and he'll only miss Saturday night and Sunday morning. Then Sunday evening's will be about 4hrs late - but I took Monday off and my work schedule is flexible enough to be able to get him back on schedule as needed.

My adult daughter will be home - but she refuses to learn to test/shoot. I'm reasonably sure I can get her to shoot - I think. But I'm wondering if I should or not. Testing takes a lot of practice - at least it did for me. While I have TIME to teach her... she's tried before and just doesn't have the patience to do it. It's hard to learn something when you don't want to. So, I think that teaching her to test just isn't going to happen - she's just not willing. I don't like it - but I can't MAKE her be willing. So... IF I can get her to just shoot - a lot easier - and even if it's a furshot, it's no worse than not shooting to begin with... But I'm nervous about shooting blind.

Do ya'll think I'd be better to do maybe a lower dose blind shoot? Or just skip those two doses. Actually, the Saturday morning shoot will be unregulated after shooting too... as I have to leave for the airport at +1.

In all honesty, last time I had to skip a dose - it seems like it almost HELPED his numbers in the long term. But I am a bit nervous about skipping two in a row. He's up to 4u at each shot. Should I have her shoot 2 or 3 u blind? or should I just miss the two doses and get back on track when I get home??

FWIW, when I travel, I have a cat sitter who takes care of my guys. Gabby will not allow anyone except me to test. The result is my cat sitter has to shoot blind. I lower Gabby's dose. You will likely be fine if your daughter shoots 3.0u. Tink will keep his depot mostly filled, his numbers may run a bit higher for a day or two but he'll get back on track. Most importantly, by lowering the dose, he'll be safe and you won't worry.

He looks pretty good right now - i'd kinda hate to have 2 skipped shots.

Ah, I see Sienne just now posted. I was going to suggest 3u as well. I think it's enough to keep him somewhat on track, but not enough to have to worry about him going too low. I'd also suggest a timed feeder or having her feed him at +4 and maybe +6 or so every day, just for a little insurance.

I agree with Sienne and Julie on giving a lowered dose for the two shots.
Also, I would make an example dose (by measuring to the dose with a used syringe and some colored water or juice) for her to compare the dose she is giving to. Leave out a copy of the hypo instructions in plain sight.
I hope you have a good or at least interesting weekend :)

Good to hear from you Jen. Good luck with the reduced dose. Sir Tink is looking so much better now. :)

Have fun on the weekend! Your part of the world must be looking pretty right now - been thinking of the Skagit when I see the tulips in bloom.

Ok thanks ladies! I'll talk to the kiddo about giving the shot. That part really isn't difficult. But yeah... there's NO WAY Tink would let someone else (like a petsitter) test him. I'm not sure a petsitter would even be able to shoot him. But having DD shooting 3u sounds like a good plan. Now I just have to get HER on board.

Ok... so sounds like she's on board. She even said "do you want me to TRY to test him while you're gone too?" :banghead: Um, YEAH! LOL I told her it would be VERY helpful if she'd learn that - for any other (hopefully more extended) vacations I might want to take. So HOPEFULLY now I can get her to actually learn it. She's so darn wishy-washy! But ultimately, I'd probably still want him on a reduced dose even if she can test, since she wont be as vigilant (or as prepared/knowledgeable) as I have gotten. At least not for awhile.
