Has anyone using MiraLAX noticed your kitty more thirsty than usual? I've noticed Dusty drinking water when I give him MiraLAX, it just scares me when I see him actually drinking water. His BG is normal, just wondering if anyone has noticed that or know if it's normal. :? He tends to get constipated about once every couple of weeks and MiraLAX keeps him normal.

Yep they will drink more on it because it pulls moisture into the bowel to help things move along. I never see mine drink much at all but I do add quite a bit of water to their food, but Maxwell whose been OTJ for 4 years will drink some when he has miralax on board.

I have a civie that takes Miralax daily - he drinks more than he did before we started this regime. I now have to top off his small water bowl daily rather than every 3 days. Mel already beat me to the reason.... :-D

Hi Robin

Just like with older humans, older cats sometimes have problems with constipation, things just don't move along like they use to, if you know what I mean. So Miralax draws water into the bowels to help soft the stools and get things moving along. It just helps keep our seniors both human and feline regular. It is more an old age thing than a diet thing. And it is one that is safe to use in a diabetic.

I have found that with the change to wet food I don't need to give remi miralax anymore. Before that he had 1/8 teaspoon everyday for about two years and it kept him regular.

So yeah, MiraLAX just helps "things" move along. It's tasteless so I just put 1/8 teaspoon in a bowl then I put his Fancy Feast on top of it and he doesn't even notice it was there. Some people use pumpkin but Dusty doesn't like it. He's always been a slightly dehydrated cat so even with wet food he gets constipated. I use it every other day because every day was too much, his stool was too soft.

I noticed MiraLAX was making my kitty depressed, thirsty, nauseous and poop too soft so I'm switching to pumpkin. I also suspect a slight uptick in his BG due to MiraLAX for some reason. He needs some kind of laxative or stool softener just to stay ahead of the ball, Dusty tends to have a bad constipation episode once a month where he'll spend all evening trying to go, vomit from the discomfort, and leave little spots of liquid poop all over the house before he finally passes some large hard pieces of poop also throughout the house. Then it takes him a couple of days to recover from it all. MiraLAX was working but the side effects on Dusty were too much even with small doses of it. I've started to mix a little pumpkin in his food and of course at first he turned his nose up to it but in the last few days he's gotten a little use to it. I'm just mixing about a toothpick end amount right now but hope to increase it gradually as needed. This morning he had a nice healthy "normally" formed poop and he's back to his normal self again. dancing_cat
