Hi, everyone:

I didn't give Lantus this morning. Mimi refused to stay on my laps after the bloody war.

Tried test him twice after dinner. First one the blood dried on the spot. Second one is peaceful. :) Finally no angry meow this time! No blood splashed on coffee table, sofa, window, floor and my cloths--- like this morning!
BIG THANKS!

Mimi ate 1/4 can of wet food (Merrick) at 6pm. The reading is 152. I guess I can give him insulin then?

Amie

I don't know if you shot yet. I would not give Mimi 2.0u. I really think it's too high of a dose. If you did shoot, can you get a test 2 hours after you gave your shot? (In Lantus Land language, that would be your +2.)

Also, it would be exceptionally helpful if you could complete a spreadsheet and attach it to your signature so we can see whatever test data you've collected. The instructions are in these link.

to summarize, here are the numbers we have (tell me if they are wrong, or if there are others):

Friday +5.5 ~ 59
Sunday +12 ~ 93
Sunday +24 ~ 152

These numbers are on 2 units BID of Lantus, correct? How long has Mimi been on insulin? Did she start right out at 2 units or did she start on a lower dose and work up to 2 units?

I am sorry I just tried the worksheet but still a little confused how to publish it.
My vet told me not to change doesage so I have no clue how to do it.

I haven't give him shot yet.

Started from 10/13/10 with 2units twice a day.
He's tested as 485 at vet's when he's diagnosed on 10/12/10.

oops, sorry I called Mimi "she."

given the minimal data and the fact that testing isn't easy for you yet, I don't think I would shoot at this number. I would take the night off and then start in the morning (if the numbers allow) at a smaller dose. 1 units BID might be a good place to start. To give 1 unit, you just draw the insulin to the 1 unit line instead of to the 2 unit line.

This may be a dumb question, so here goes... Are you dosing straight from the pen or are you using a syringe?

When you said you didn't know how to change the dose, it got me wondering if the vet set the dose on the Lantus pen for you.

It sounds like you are testing mimi on your lap?
Maybe you could try putting mimi on a chair with a high back and arms and sit on the edge. Or in the corner of the couch. Some cats just dont like being held, making the process harder on both them and the bean. My girl was very good about testing and her meds....but without some sort of backing (chair, bathtub, piano, whatever) there was no way I could do a thing to her. Just a thought.

I hope it gets easier. You got lots of fantastic ideas earlier today.

And I too, would think 2u is likely too much for the same reasons others stated.

Thanks for the advice, I will work on it.

What's BID?

I do use syringes, what I meant is I don't know how to figure the right does. Like making decisions of 0.5 unit or 1unit.

Below is a link to one of the stickies you will find at the top of the lantus forum, which discusses dosing. These are the guidelines *most* (always exceptions) will follow for dosing.

A lot of this info can be overwhelming, and yes...make you want to cry or pull your hair out. But take some time, read the other stickies at the top of the page, post daily, and ask questions. You are not alone. This is a wonderful group of very caring, and experienced people who can help guide you in this learning process AND keep your cat safe.

BID = medical speak for twice a day (TID = 3 times/day, SID = once/day, QID = 4 times/day)

FWIW, most of us rely on the Board for dose decisions. We use the dosing protocol that is in the sticky note and work with each other if we have questions. Frankly, my vet pretty much leaves me alone when it comes to adjusting Gabby's insulin.

You have to do what you're comfortable with.
