Milo losing weight

Hello, I don’t know is this is right area to post. I inherited my Moms diabetic cat in September. He was not well controlled. He was in kibble and Novulin. I don’t think Mom was giving him enough insulin and I know she wasn’t testing him. Since I got him I test him, switched him to Glargine and a raw diet. He is chipper, seems to be peeing less and eats good. Not like he’s starving, but good. I feed him about 6oz of food a day. He was about 12# on 9/3. He is down to 11.4#. His numbers were consistently over 500 now he is in the 200-400 range. I was using a Libre but it seems to be wildly inaccurate he is getting more tolerant of my testing him. I don’t know what his ideal weight is, I have another vet appt next Monday. Thoughts?

This is a good forum to post in, it is for general kitty health issues.

For a lot of the time from 9/3 to 11/4, Milo was in higher numbers, so it's not unexpected he would have lost weight during that time. If you have a kitty/baby scale, I would weigh him each week now, and see if he's trending in a better direction now that his numbers are better. The other thing to consider is not so much the quantity of food, but the calories. My 14lb Neko did well on 4 oz of raw per day and it was about 220 calories which was a good amount for her to maintain her weight.

A vet appointment is a good idea to figure out what his idea weight is. Then you can feed more or less (or the same), depending on where his weight trends compared to ideal weight. Can you feel his ribs easily?

Side note, looks like you aren't using the spreadsheet from FDMB. It is missing some information, and has some extra fields. We have people who can help you convert the SS to our format, if you wish. There are also a few extra fields we like to have people put in their signature, so we don't have to keep asking the same question over and over. Details here: New? How You Can Help Us Help You! The questions include what meter you are currently using, what you are feeding, and what dosing method you'd like to follow.

Hi! Yes I am using the one from the FDMB FB page. I’m happy to convert it. I can’t easily feel his ribs. He doesn’t seem like he is that much under weight to me. I’ve had cats my entire life, I’m 45 . Anyways I’m anxious to see the vet and see what they say. I do have a baby scale. He is afraid to get in it thought. ‍♀️

Good if you can't easily feel his ribs. Some diabetic cats started out a little "fluffy". I find it helps to put treats on the scale.

Also right now you may need to feed more food . As his glucose levels become more controlled, you should see his weight and appetite level off.
