mid day feeding

Hi all! We are new here and I had a question regarding trying to do a mid day feeding. My kitty. Patootie, was diagnosed about 2 years ago. It's been a bumpy road but I think we are moving in the right direction. The biggest problem we have is that she seems to be STARVING all the time. She will get into anything that is left out and while we try to be diligent (I've even gotten baby locks for the cabinet with the garbage can) she will eat anything she can find. She will tear open packages, lick remainders out of bowls, leap on the table and counter if our backs are turned. Needless to say, when she does get something to eat (like the bread dough she ate yesterday) it wrecks havoc with her numbers and her system. We are trying to be very careful about things but... sometimes there is a slip :(. When it comes to her meal time she is frantic and gobbles her food in seconds. It's actually kind of scary to watch (and a bit sad as I feel terrible she is so hungry!)

Anyway, I wondered if a mid day feeding might help with that? The problem is that I work so am unable to be home mid day to give it to her. Does anyone know of a sturdy timed feeder for wet food? It would need to be pretty sturdy as I know she would pick at it until the thing opened. I know a mid day feeding would mean possibly shifting the insulin a bit but I thought if we could manage her hunger a bit then she wouldn't be so frantic and wouldn't be constantly searching for food elsewhere.

Any thoughts or ideas would be so helpful!!

A little background:

She is currently on Lantus 1u BID
We feed Friskies canned (tried FF but she became very constipated and vet thought it might be too low protien). She gets 1 can BID.
She weighs about 8/9 lbs. She is a bit underweight and I would really like her to put on a pound or two
She also has asthma and we use an inhaler BID.

Here is her spreadsheet so far. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aq21bpeEMzMBdE9Bd0JaVGJQZWE3alB3R014OURud0E&hl=en#gid=0

Thanks so much and this really is an informative and helpful site.

Are you on your current feeding schedule because a vet put you on it? Just curious. My vet put us on a twice a day feeding schedule but after a few days it was clear that wasn't working, so now we free feed with great success. If you're not home, I know some people freeze some of the wet food and put that out so their cat can eat it throughout the day as it thaws.

I have not had her Thyroid tested recently. Good point. I will set up a visit with my vet to do so.

The BID feeding was recommended by vet and I have needed to stick with as I work and some days am gone from the home all day :(

I have read that more frequent feedings are more beneficial and have thought about freezing the food but with how she is right now I really think she would just gnaw on the food or even eat it frozen :(

On a side note... can anyone open my SS? Did I post it wrong?

Thanks for your input!

I can't open your SS - I don't think you have it set up as public.

I'm sure someone will come along and tell you about what timed feeders are best. I wish I could help with that but I work from home so don't need one. There's one I've seen recommended that has five slots - that might be ideal so you could set up a few smaller meals instead of just one extra.

Ah ha! Thanks! I did have it set to private.

I'm sure someone will have some input as well.

Thanks again!

I love our PetSafe automatic feeder. Our Oliver completely destroyed two feeders but he could never get into this one. It is easy to program and has 5 slots for food. You can find
it on the Internet or at PetSmart.
