Mid-cycle number goes up-any guesses why?

I have been told by my vet to test Noodle, who's on Lantus, at AMPS, +4, +8, and PMPS. Having read that Lantus often nadirs at +5 to +7, I had been testing him mostly at +6 when I could. Often his +6 is higher than his AMPS. Why would this be? My new vet gave me a handout sheet on Lantus that also said that while the "mean" nadir is +5 to +7, they can range from +1 to +9, quite a spread. I still haven't been able to hit upon what I think is Noodle's nadir. Do I need to test more often? He said do the +4 and +8 tests, plus before every shot for 2 days every time there's a dose change. Is this too little testing? Thanks for thoughts. I'm beginning to think I'll never get a handle on Noodle's patterns!

Because likely Noodles needs more insulin. Except for this morning, your BGs are relatively constant throughout the day considering the accuracy of the meter.

Thanks, Larry. We're increasing the insulin but I'm puzzled because he had more yellows on .5 or 1U. Maybe just beginners luck :? I appreciate your response.

just so you know.... the nadir can wander....

if you want a better idea....
try a curve ever so often.....
change your times around....

one day, do every 3 hours...( and night too)

and one day do every 4.... switch it around....

it's data that is really helpful as you learn your cats pattern.

Thanks, Rhiannon (I LOVE that name!) and shadow,
Hopefully I can get some more varied tests in over the weekend. My vet thinks 4 times a day is enough but if they're at the same time, might I not miss the nadir if it's variable? I plan to do a curve after Noodle has been on his new dose a few more days although I hate poking Noodle so often  Thanks so much for your help!

The idea is to test when the probable nadir is and change it up a bit each day since the nadir moves. Also, many cats go lower at night, so getting some of those is good for learning what your cat does.
Ex, you might do one or two of these times each day and cycle through.

Hi BJM,
Thanks so much for your help. I plan on getting the two days of tests that my vet wants but then switch the times around like you said and see if I can see at least a little bit of a pattern. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hey Christi,

Also remember, you don't need the vet's OK to do any additional testing you deem necessary. Noodle is YOUR cat, so you need to do what is best for him.....

I am a dork, but after I started getting the varied tests in, I had fun trying to find where the white (the holes) in my spreadsheet were and making sure I got some testing done in that time as well....it is how I found out that Skooter nadir's rather early, usually by +4 to +5.....

Good luck on your additional testing!
