1- What does OTJ mean?
2- My cat got her diabetes from a depot-medrol injection last september and has been in "remission" for 8 days now: no insulin and normal BG levels for 8 days. But the 3 months of high blood glucose has made her rear legs weak (plantigrad a little). I thought when her BG levels would be normal the problem would go away quickly, but it hasn't yet. Should I give her methylcobalamin B-12 or should I just wait for the problem to go away? And how long?

Re: 2 question...

OTJ means Of The Juice (i. off the insulin)

The thing with the back legs is called diabetic neuropathy. I never used B12 for Simba, just insulin times, and it took 3 months before he walked normal again.

Re: 2 question...

So you wouldn't recommend me to wait, but to start giving her that b12 pill right away?

Re: 2 question...

It was at the end of December that I came home one day and saw that Kitten was walking funny with his back legs. Stupid me actually called my husband and said, "oh no, Kit fell of a chair or something and twisted his back legs", and decided to wait it out. Within a couple of days, he was slipping all over the place as he was walking, and he could barely take a couple of steps before stopping and sitting/lying down. He couldn't walk up/down stairs, wouldn't come to us at the dinner table (would just stay on the rug b/c he couldn't "slip" there), wouldn't even eat unless his bowl was on a rug. It was devastating for us, and with a little research realized that it was neuropathy and our concerns about him possibly having diabetes were probably true and we should definitely get to a vet. Within a week of diagnosis, I found this site and was reading up about methyl-B12. I found a health-food store near my house that sold it and we started Kit on it right away. He gets one 5mg pill in the morning, mixed with his food (usual dose is about 3-5mg, we chose 5 b/c it was easier than cutting it in half every day). Probably a month later, he was walking around like it was no big deal. Within 5 weeks, he was back up/down the stairs. Its a little less than 2 months now and he's galloping around (literally)...I think he's so excited that he can run again, that he just run around for no reason. It is also during this time that we got his BGs regulated and he is getting constant normal numbers.

So I think, ultimately, the decision is up to you. You could wait, but you could give methyl-b12 to speed up the process/help out. I am happy that we made the decision to give it to Kit. It didn't hurt and it was no extra work for us. I really do think it was the reason why he's doing fantastic now.

Re: 2 question...

Lilandkit Thanks for sharing!
So after 5 weeks or so when your cats bg was regulated and you noticed his legs were back to normal, did you keep on giving him methylb12 everyday? Is it something we have to keep on giving in order to prevent the disease from coming back or can we stop as soon as the cat is walking normaly?

Oh and are we 100% sure my cat can't react to that specific pill? She got her diabetes from depot medrol which normaly does not affect cats, so now I'm a little afraid of the consequence!

Re: 2 question...

Well that was only a couple weeks ago, and yes, we are still giving the pills each morning. The main reason is because he's SOOO much better, but he's still not perfect - he still twists his foot a little when he walks....and also because we still have about 1/3 of the bottle left, so we might as well finish. I'm actually not too sure how it works for a preventative measure, or when it's a good idea to stop. Someone else was asking about whether or not she should give it to her cat to prevent neuropathy and most people were saying that it can't harm the cat since any excess is pee'd out.

I'm also really sorry but I dont know if 100% your cat wont react. I do know that you have to make sure that it is pure methyl-B12 and that it doesn't contain any sweeteners. But anything more that than I have no idea...eek! I actually never even heard about giving these pills til I got advice from here. Hopefully someone will be able to chime in with more info for you!

Hi!
I highly recommend giving the Methyl B-12. I did a lot of research in January & I never read anythign about a cat having an adverse reaction to it.

My kitty was diagnosed in Dec & is so picky with food he's been impossible to regulate. About 4 weeks after diagnosis he was walking funny. The next day he didn't want to come out from under the bed at all & when I finally got him out it was as if he was half paralyzed...it was such a struggle to get him out! I started googling & found out about neuropathy & the need for the Methyl B-12. Went to the Vitamin Shoppe the next day & started him on 3mg. (He's 12lbs, 15 lbs before the diabetes kicked in.) Upped it to 5mg on day 3 & by day 5 he was back to normal on the non carpeted areas & steps.

Not easy to get those 5 pills down his throat either; he's quick to get them out of the back of his throat & on the floor. After tiring of the fight & the claws in me for 2 weeks, I started warming the a little water from a can of tun & letting them disolve in there. Once it's cool enough I add a tsp of tuna & he gobbles it right up - not a care in the world he's got some black cherry flavored pills mixed in. Since he's been impossible to regulate so far he gets the Methyl B-12 daily. Rather than waste all that tuna, I just add tap water & refrigerate. By the next day the water smells enough like tuna he comes running.

Giving B12(the pink stuff) shots weekly to my Shadoe has just about eliminated her pancreatitis issues as it's great for inflammation, among many other benefits.
You can't go wrong with giving B12.

I ordered Methyl-B12 directly at the pharmacy. It should arrive next thursday. It such like a "rare" product nobody's looking for in Switzerland. And by the way the pharmacist told me they didn't sell pills but have to order the original substance (methylcobalamin B12) in liquid form and give me a syringe to measure the 3mg daily quantity I'm about to put in my cat's food.

50$ for 25 days of treatment  I hope 25 days is gonna be enough!!!
