Meters that detect ketones?

If your cat was ever diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, these are worth the investment. The strips are pricey, however you may detect ketones in the blood as much as 5 days before they become present in the urine. That time period can be critical in a diabetic not doing well. Treating DKA is very expensive, so heading it off is worth it, Two meters in the US which test ketones are the Nova Max Plus and the Precision XTra.

I looked into getting one for Squallie. The strips are definitely more pricey than glucose test strips! However, here is a link to one of the more reasonable ones I found: https://storefront.novacares.com/storefront/. I also found another fairly reasonable one but didn't save the link, and of course now I can't find it again! But shop around, there may be other, cheaper ones out there. :)

I wanted to add: if you go there, click on the "Free Meter Offers." If you buy two boxes of test strips they'll throw the meter in at no extra charge.

Thanks for this info. I'm going to get one for Chloe. She's not showing any signs other than BG testing hi. I have the urine strips also, but it's not very helpful when she backs into a corner and squats to pee.

And...if you put in TAKE5 at checkout you get $5.00 at Nova Max. I did a Google search for coupon and it came up on and old tweet, but still works!
