Meter question

Hi there

I am currently using a One Touch Ultra 2 meter. Works fine as far as I know, seems to be rated OK. I don't remember how much I paid for it, bought it way back in Sept 2011 when Gem was originally Dx'd. Now that I am trying to test regularly I see that the strips are expensive. Do you think it pays for me to "lose" the money spent on the meter, and buy a Relion so that my costs going forward are lower?

Are the strips outrageous? I only used the Relion, so I got used to paying 30 cents or so per strip (in the 100 packs).

I want to say I paid around 80 bucks for 50?? Is that possible?

You would have to ask some of the people on the Lantus group who buy arkray strips from, I believe ADW. They are equivalent to Relion and there seem to be good deals. I don't know too much about it because I am in Canada and it doesn't apply to me.

I love my OneTouch. I recently found a lady with diabetes on craigslist who sold me some of her extra strips (300 strips for $100). Other than that, I only buy them from EBay.

I bought a Relion in an emergency once (J.D. and I were stuck in California without my meter, when we missed a flight home), and it was okay. I got more errors with it, which to you, would mean re-doing a test that had an error.

I just bought an Arkray Meter and 450 test strips from American Diabetes Wholesale, all for $89 and change. I haven't really started using it, yet. I did some testing with it last weekend and comparing it to the OneTouch and the BG numbers were somewhat lower on the Arkray with every test. But, they are cheap. I think I used 10 strips and got maybe 2 errors on it, though.

I would try EBay for OneTouch strips. You can find ones that are going to expire in a couple months for less money. I've gotten some great deals on EBay, you just have to be patient, and keep trying.

Thanks for the advice. It dawned on me that I'm plowing through them. Sometimes I waste a few not getting enough blood! When I went to buy them at Duane Reade (major pharmacy chain in NYC) I almost fell down at the cost, especially since 3 days later I'm through one bottle of 25!

Ideally I stick with the same meter so I don't have to take into acct variance. I will check eBay for deals.

Buying over the counter is going to be painful on any meter but the ReliOn. Ebay is the best source for good deals on strips, or possibly Craigslist if you trust it. Before Walmart started selling the Aviva around here I was paying $78 over the counter for 50. I tried REALLY hard to never run out!
