please tell me what I need to go get tomorrow for testing his blood sugar. I'm so overwhelmed that I'm confused.
I'm seeing I need to check is levels every day before I give him insulin? Do I start this the day he starts his meds? I hope the vet can explain everything to me so I understand. I apologize if I sound scattered but I've been reading all day and I'm on overload.
I'm also freaking out taking away the hard food as both cats love to graze, they both eat canned Fancy Feast twice a day. I know I have to take it away I just need some support and strength for others.
Thanks you

I use the Relion Micro from Walmart. It's a relatively inexpensive meter as are the strips. So you will need to choose a meter, strips for the meter, and lancets ( I also use the Relion Thin lancets about $5 for 100). Don't forget cotton balls. A few strips, lancets, and test strips will come with the meter. You can also get the Relion Confirm. Both of these meters need a very small amount of blood for the test. Please make sure to buy the correct strips for whichever meter you choose.

You'll want 26-28 gauge lancets to improve you chances of success in home testing.

Thank you I'll pick it up tomorrow.
Like I said I'm so overwhelmed with so much info that I'm lost. One day at a time I keep telling myself.
Thanks again.

Think how you studied in school. You didn't learn everything in 1 session. You went over it numerous times. You underlined stuff, or made note cards to review. Learning all this is a process, not an event.

Hi Robin and welcome,

I note from your previous thread that you will be using Lantus. My Saoirse has always been a grazer. She is being treated with Lantus, too. Like many people here, I feed her mini meals throughout the day. Lantus is a long-acting insulin and this system works well for her.

The key thing with feeding a cat being treated with Lantus is to lift the food 2 hours before the pre-injection blood glucose test to ensure that the number isn't influenced by food. (Note: If a cat is in low numbers 2 hours before the next injection is due, food should continue to be given if the blood glucose numbers need steering upwards.)

Between the shock of the diagnosis and the flood of new information things are very overwhelming at first but lots of things that are strange now will become second nature to you fairly quickly. Promise!

All of you are just so wonderful , I thank you so much.
I don't feel so alone and am gathering strength from all your support. I really feel this is now something I can do thanks to this site and all of your support....Dasher and I are truly grateful.

Just a thought, Robin. Saoirse is recovering from a pancreatitis flare so I have to feed her smaller meals more frequently than might be the optimum for kitties on Lantus. Maybe if you post on the Lantus Tight Regulation board and ask about the best way to schedule feeds for Lantus kitties the members there will be able to help you further.

Glad to hear that you're feeling better about things today.
