Hi all.
My Callie Mae was recently diagnosed (Saturday) with an UTI and after spending all of Sat and Sunday watching her in what is obvious discomfort, I called the vet today and asked for something for pain.
She sent me home with Metacam Oral to be administered in varying amounts over 5 days.
Upon looking into this medication, I am torn as to whether or not this is a wise choice.
I have read success stories as well as folks claiming it can be lethal.

Does anyone here have any experience/input on this?
I am due to give her a dose now, so any info would be appreciated.

Remind your vet of the BLACK BOX warning on Metacam now. If the vet doesn't know about it, thats a red flag right there!

I wouldn't use it due to the risk of renal damage; her renal system is already under attack from the UTI. This could wind up the straw that permanently damages her kidneys.

Be firm and request an alternative.

Metacam has its uses but I would think that there should be something safer as an option, like buprenex for example?

Thanks all.
I called my vet back and told her I wasn't comfortable with the metacam, and she had no problem.
She said it is safe to use short term. She has used it on her own cats, but she had no problem at all giving me something else, which was buprenex. She said she gave me the metacam since it was also an anti inflammatory and maybe that would help with the inflamed bladder, as well as help with the pain.

at any rate, thanks again.
wish she would have given me credit for the $18 I had to spend on the metacam.

I am glad you got something else. Metacam, in my opinion, is something you use in very life and death situations when the scary side effects are outweighed by the urgency of the current situation. Here is a recent thread of another cat prescribed Metacam viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55748&p=604059&hilit=BLack+Box#p604059, please look for Carolynandlatte's post, she is one our most researched members on this drug and has some links both in her post and in her siggy line that you might be interested in reading and maybe sharing with your vet.

Hope the buprenex kicks in quickly and Callie Mae is feeling better soon!

I'm glad you got a different medication - buprenex is very safe with a good track record. Metacam almost killed my cat - she developed a bleeding ulcer on it. Was in the hospital three days and ended up with a bill of $900.00. I wouldn't recommend that medication to anyone!!! Jan

I have always had folders for my cats marked at the vet for NO METACAM NO CONVENIA.
Buprenex is a great pain relief; one of my cats gets loopy, like a drunken sailor on bupe, and he sure has no pain.

Just a note here. My Squeak can't tolerate any pain meds but Metacam. So if he absolutely needs pain meds, he gets a careful dose of oral metacam. I know there are risks. So sometimes there are extenuating circumstances, but it is very important to be fully informed.

What do you mean by not tolerate pain meds? Bad reactions? Too strong?

I have been giving Gabapentin and Oliver is much better on it, so bupe for him is very seldom now.

he tries to die if given opiates (very bad dental experience). we haven't tried all of them, we don't dare, we stay out of anything in the same class as buprenex, etc. So if he's had a big dental, he gets a bit of metacam.

maybe look into gabapentin; it's helping both my acros. I guess tramadol would not be a good option.
