I had to leave right after giving Merry his Insulin but I made sure he ate first so hopefully he doesn’t go too low. One of my other cats bit my hand really badly so I’m at Emergency now. I texted my vet & she said to go right away because it’s pretty deep. I’ve never had a bad serious bite before & I was worried if Simon would be in trouble because I have to tell them it’s a cat bite but she assured me he would be safe. Hopefully we aren’t at the hospital too long. Not a great way to start the holidays :(

So sorry to hear about your bite. Even when we live with and love them, it turns out bites on the hand (especially knuckles) can be dangerous. Glad you are getting medical care now. Waiting can be dangerous.

:bighug:

Yeah my vet said antibiotics need to be started within 4 hrs ideally. Worried about the public health unit calling me about Simon. They said he’ll need to be quarantined because he hadn’t had a rabies shot in a few years. My vet said she’s only ever heard of quarantining them at home so I hope that’s the case.

That happened to Rover about 7 years ago in a town just north of you (where Merry came from). He bit his former owner. It was a well deserved bite - the owner taunted him and wouldn't stop. The bite was deep but did not require stitches. A fang bite. The health unit was called and the house was visited. The owners were told that the cat would have to go into quarantine and that they would have to pay for the stay. After a lot of "discussion" (to put it mildly), the health unit agreed to home quarantine provided that the cat have no contact with any other members of the public for I believe it was 7 or 10 days. Rover spent his jail time in one room of the house, allowed contact with the owners only. You may have to argue a bit to get home quarantine.

You did right to have the bite checked out. It's just that the health unit has rules and protocols - even if the situation sometimes doesn't really warrant them. Shortly after that, Rover came to live with us and never once bit.

Edit: You are in a different health unit district than ours. I don't know if there are provincial guidelines regarding animal bits or if each health unit decides its own.

Oooh I’d have made up a reason for the injury and kept the cat out of it. Maybe different here. Hope you recover quickly.

Bites aren't good on knuckles. I have a scar on a knuckle from trying to make my sister-in-law's cat feel at ease because they had to move in with us. I didn't see a doctor, but I kept a close eye on it. I did have some remarks from others about it. I hope it doesn't end up in any sort of quarantine for you!

@Red & Rover (GA) I'm guessing it will be the Belleville Health Unit contacting me. I live in a small town East of Belleville. I went to the Picton hospital which was great, no wait time and we were out of there within an hour. Had I went to Belleville hospital we'd still be sitting in the waiting room.

I had to tell them what happened so they would know the right abx to prescribe. I've had bites before & never worried about them but not like this. It bled like crazy & immediately swelled up. I thought I was going to pass out it hurt so bad. I texted my vet right away & sent her a photo & she told me I had to get to the hospital right away for antibiotics because it was quite bad.

What happened was Simon got annoyed by Merry & I heard a hiss so I went to check it out. I know better than to touch Simon when he's in that frame of mind because he has displaced aggression but I instinctively reached my hand out to him to tell him it was ok & he attacked it. I could hear his teeth go through something which the doctor thinks was just muscle & not a tendon since I can still move my thumb. It's still very swollen & I imagine will be quite sore & bruised tomorrow.

On another note, Merry is 8.4 at +3 so all is good :) It's nice that he didn't really bounce much if at all after his greens yesterday :)

The physical description of your bite is the same as Rover's previous owner. A lot of bleeding and swelling/bruising under the skin.

The health unit will receive the hospital report about the bite. Downplay what you tell the health unit if you have to. It was to Rover's advantage that his shots were up-to-date and that he had been an indoor cat since he was a kitten.

Glad the ER wait was short.

@Red & Rover (GA) Yes, I told the hospital I was trying to give Simon his heart medication & he got upset with me. That's understandable for a kitty to get upset when you're trying to pill them. Plus he's 11 yrs old, indoor boy & I know he's not rabid. My vet will stand up for us as well.
