Miss kitty has been doing her (death) meow more than usual lately.it is a horrible meow she does that sounds like she is dying that is why I call it that.she usually does it when she is playing or lonely but she has been doing it a lot lately.when I walk in to check on her she gets happy.she is laying by water dish or walking around or just laying somewhere when she does it.she has been peeing ok and I have been giving vit c to her to help prevent bladder problems.vit c is a miracle worker for for bladder problems with my cats.im not sure why she is crying more than usual and it really worries me.i have checked her bg during these times and her bg is usually high.she loves doing it the most at night when I'm sleeping.

How old is Miss Kitty again? There was a thread up not too long ago discussing a similar situation. I'll see if I can find a link. When was her most recent blood panel? How much Vit C is she getting per day? Is she having any urinary issues right now?

If your kitty has a history of having calcium oxalate crystals in her pee, you might want to stop the Vit C supplementation: http://www.petmd.com/blogs/thedailyvet/ktudor/2012/sept/vitamin_c_and_calcium_oxalate_stones-27000#

She might just be hungry, given that she's doing it when her BG is up. If she is getting older, there's another supplement you can consider called Chlorodin-Fel that's for issues like meowing in the middle of the night.

All my cats get fed at the same time in the am/pm. I feed them in different rooms so they all get their own food and have plenty of time to eat it. So Merlin is in his room and when he is done, he gives me this death meow. It is so haunting with a low deep meow, so I bet Ms. Kitty sounds something like that. When I open the door, there he stands with his favorite blue mouse toy in his mouth. He walks out of the room and drops the mouse in the hallway and then walks on. For Merlin, he is just telling me that I want out. This is not quite the same situation as Ms. Kitty but just thought I would share. She is definitely trying to tell you something.

She had a blood panel done in February of this year when she had her entropion surgery.everything came up ok.thyroid was ok as well.i watch her pee and she pees with no problems.i gave her vit c when she was first diagnosed for like a week or so since she was peeing so much.i haven't given her any lately.i never thought to check the food dish during these death meows at night to see if she has food.she has been playing and stuff and doing her death meow then too.she does it when she wants me to come play hide and seek too.lol.miss kitty is 12 yrs old.im in the process of finding a better cheaper vet.im on disability and this vet I see now wants to suck me dry.i have called them and asked them many times for a cheaper insulin than lantus and I guess they are getting tired of me asking cause they finally called and left a message saying they could switch to prozinc or vetsulin but need to do a blood curve at vet office first.they didn't do one when they prescribed the lantus they told me to do my curves at home to save me some money but copy results down now they are changing it around??im not happy about the lantus being diluted and pharm moving it into vials from the pen.

Miss kitty hasn't has any bladder problems at all that I know of.

I'm confused about what you were saying about the Lantus being diluted? Why are they diluting it?
Please let us know what you find out about whether the food bowl's empty during the "death meows".

Vet told me pharmacy had to dilute the lantus and I don't know why she had that done.she kept telling me she didn't think I could draw a 1/2 unit of insulin so she said it was going to be diluted!she wouldn't tell me anything that I needed to know after I wouldn't do all the tests she wanted to do.she crossed her arms and pursed her mouth up like she are a lemon the whole time.a lot of stuff didn't go right with the lantus and I didn't know at the time it wasn't suppose to be diluted or removed from the pen and put into vials.miss kitty didn't do her death meow last night but was doing it this morning playing around.if she does it again at night I will go check food dish.she seems to feel her best at night lately too.im wondering when I get my next lantus pen if I don't switch to another insulin should I reduced my dose?im planning on making the next lantus not diluted so won't I have to kind of start over or reduce dosage?im worried I will end up overdosing her.

Hope this helps you, this is what I found about diluting Lantus:

from their website- "Do not dilute or mix Lantus® with any other insulin or solution. If mixed or diluted, the solution may become cloudy, and the onset of action/time to peak effect may be altered in an unpredictable manner."

from Wikia/Diabetes in Pets- "Because of the pH action, Lantus is a bit more sensitive than other insulins -- it needs to have an (acidic) pH of 4 to work, and therefore may not be diluted, mixed with other insulins, or kept overnight in syringes."

Some insulins can be diluted to aid in administering very small doses, however, Lantus is not one of them. You might want to direct your vet to these websites. Frankly, if I were you, I would be looking for a new vet.

Yes, this was my understanding also, that Lantus shouldn't be diluted. That is strange...

Hey Beth, I remember reading somewhere that Vit C wasn't good for diabetic cats, on the internet somewhere while I was looking for something else. Do some homework and see if that is a myth or not.

I had Colin on Vit C for awhile until I read that it might be bad for diabetics. Couldn't find any solid evidence either way, so decided to take him off of it, just in case.

Too much vitamin C can make kitty's urine become too acidic, which can potentially cause crystals in the urine and bring on associated problems, blockages, etc.

I'm definitely looking for another one

Vit c is suppose to be good for diabetic cats I read.i only have it to her for a week for any bladder issues.it is really good for uti problems.i use to give it to my late Siamese and it helped every time.a lot of people give it to their cats for uti etc.holistic meds type thing.hey would miss kitty's constipation problems cause her to be meowing a lot too?she has been more constipated since I started insulin.i have been giving Vaseline to help her out and looking for something else to help her out.

Hey there, I was using vitamin c for crystal prevention long before Bubba was DX w/ diabetes. I stopped when I got him eating Wellness because it has cranberry in it for the same reason, urinary health. Since Bubba was DX I saw somewhere on the internet that vitamin C was not good for diabetic cats.....don't know why and I don't even know if it was a reputable site but, worth you investigating.

As far as the constipation, give a tsp of pure canned pumpkin, ( not pie filling kind with sugar and spices) and mix it in his wet food every meal. Start with a tsp and work of to 1 tbsp. in a few days. I give it daily to all my animals as it regulates them both ways, constipation and diarrhea. Hope that helps. And I would think that if she is really full of it, she could be in discomfort and thus crying a lot. If after you get her to pass her poop and she is still meowing a lot, it might be worth a trip to the vet.

I don't see any where where it says vit c is bad for diabetic cats.where did you see it at?i saw where it says it can cause crystals if you give too much overdose.but most say it is good for cats diabetic too and good for getting rid of crystals and inflammation etc of uti.

What kind of bladder issues was she having? UTIs, inflammation, or crystals? There are different things you can use for each.
I do think constipation can make her more meowy. The pumpkin is a good idea, as Bobbie and Bubba mentioned.

Like I said, somewhere on the internet and I couldn't tell you where, I stumbled across it and it might not have been a reliable source. The premise for it is for it to make the urine more acidic so crystal don't form. From what you are saying if you give too much, it can cause crystals? It is worth researching I guess.

Yes, making the pee too acidic or giving too much Vit C can increase risk for calcium oxalate crystals (not struvite crystals). One type of crystal develops in pee that's too acidic and the other develops in pee that's too basic- so the pee has to be kept in a certain pH range to reduce risk for both types of crystals.

I was curious about the Vit C diabetes question; so I just googled it real quick. This one vet's site says Vit C supplementation can impact BG readings: http://www.2ndchance.info/diabetescat.htm "Cats that are anemic may appear to have higher blood glucose levels than they really have. Cats that are not consuming enough water or are dehydrated will also test higher. Testing after your cat eats a fatty meal can also influence the meter reading as can vitamin C supplements." I don't know how credible or not this is, but I thought I'd share what I found. There are other sites talking about benefits for diabetic people and extrapolating that to pets.
