HI,
Carlie Charlene & Cutter,
Newbies, Cutter just diagnosed diabetes, Trying to calculate meow mix seafood collection for carb % but when I add up all the ingredient% it comes up just over 100% and then I just don't know what to do.This is one wet food that cutter liked before trying to transition him over to canned food .He ate mostly meow mix kibble all his life. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much to everyone who contributes to this sight it is a wealth of info and we are very grateful that we have found it.

Hi Carlie and sugarcat Cutter and Welcome to the FDMB! The best place you never expected to be.

We have no information available on the Meow Mix cat foods.

Most of us feed Friskies pate style, Fancy Feast classic pate style, or Wellness canned food. Most of the wet foods that have gravy in them are too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. We look for <10% carbs from this food chart. Unfortunately, the Del Monte Pet Food Company, the owner of the Meow Mix line, is not included in this food chart.

If your cat likes chunky foods, I can suggest the Fancy Feast Flaked style foods or Fancy Feast Chunky style foods as alternatives.

Where do you live? US, Canada, International? country and state/province. Maybe city too if you are willing to share that.

Welcome to a fellow taxachusetts resident.

I'm north of Boston in a little town called Newbury, population 3558.

I wouldn't call the City of Weymouth a little town with it's population of 53000+ ;-)

It's all relative I guess. :o

When was your 10 year old cat Cutter diagnosed? It sounds like you have been doing this sugardance for a short while, from your other post on chia gel.

What insulin are you using? and what dose?

Cutter was diagnosed June 20th w/a b/g of over 500 with no ketones. A week later b/g 400's no ketone in urine. Our home testing is running in the low300's and Cutter is showing no signs of DKA but will be going back to vet Monday for more tests.Cutter is not on any insulin @ the present we are trying to do it with diet but insulin is not out of the question.Thank you for your concern and again I have to say what a great sight this is.

A change from high carb food to low carb food can drop the BG (blood glucose) levels 100 points. You normally see the results within a week. The longer you wait to get Cutter on insulin, the more difficult it will be to regulate him and the organ damage will continue as long as Cutter is over renal threshold.

Cats are the one animal that can heal their pancreas and heal or produce more beta cells to produce insulin. Your best chance of remission is within the first 6 months. We advocate supporting the pancreas in it's healing with insulin injections. Lantus, Levimir, Prozinc and PZI are the insulins with the longest duration and effectiveness in cats.

Please continue to test for ketones daily. Ketone levels can increase very quickly, going from none to high in less than a day. If you ever see trace ketones, it's a call to your vet. If you see high ketones, it's an immediate vet visit to the nearest emergency vet clinic to check for DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), a life threatening and very expensive stay at the vet clinic to treat.

Hoping you can get Cutter on a low-carb wet food to help his BG numbers. If you do not see much lower numbers than those 300's you are getting, Cutter needs insulin sooner rather than later.

All the best to you and hope to see you with more questions.
