Is it possible to get Meningitis from a cat. My son says it is and knows of someone who did. I disagree. Thanks.

Start with the definition of meningitis.
  • "[V]iruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms" are implicated in meningitis.

Can some of these affect both cats and humans? Absolutely. For example, both humans and cats may get E. coli, salmonella, giardia, campylobacter, certain strains of the flu (it was rare, but H1N1 was documented in a cat) and so on.

So is it possible that a person wound up with meningitis from something the cat had? Yes. A culture from both with the exact same pathogen would be supportive evidence.

As your mother admonished you ... "wash your hands!"
