megacolon and anesthesia, antibiotics and dry mouth?

Hi, all! I am just having some concerns about Trixter getting put under. He has megacolon and slow digestion. I am worried about him coming out of the anesthesia and choking on food if he hasn"t gone enough potty. Maybe I should give him an enema the day before? I mean, he takes miralax and he does "go" but not always as much as he should, and sometimes it takes a few days, other times he will have diarrhea. So I just have to kinda go with the "flow" if ya know what I mean, lol. I know he can't eat 12 hours prior to surgery, but I just wanna make sure he is cleaned out enough when he gets put under that any food he eats the day before goes through him far enough to not put him at risk. Opinions?

Also, yesterday was his 12th day on what i think is a large dosage of amoxicillin (50mg twice a day) and he was at the water bowl so many times that it scared me yesterday. So I dug through the diabetes drawer (lol) and tested him with two meters, both read 71. PHEW! Do the antibiotics make anyone elses kitties mouths dry so they drink more? Mine rarely drink...

Also, I stopped his antibiotics after the 12th day because he would just smell it before I gave it to him and start gagging... then after I gave it to him he would throw up. I read somewhere online that the dose should be 5mg per pound of body weight per day, split into 2 or 3 doses. Trixter is 12 pounds, so he was getting 40mg more than that per day. What do you guys think? Should I continue the amoxicillin for the last two days even though this is happening? I've only skipped one dose so far. It was making him feel worse. @-)

Smeagol is feeling so much better already! He had pain meds for a few days and the antibiotics are really making a difference, too. He is acting really happy for the first time in a while. He's been a crabby boy for quite a while now. cat(2)_steam

Thanks, all. *FDMB FAM HUGS!*

Not sure I can help with any of this but wanted to mention that sometimes pain meds given after dentals can cause constipation. Make sure vet knows about Trixters Megacolon.

In people, antibiotics can frequently cause dry mouth. i would mention all these concerns to the vettybean. Its possible that a different antibiotic might not do that.

Thanks for the reply, Lisa. I was surprised no one was replying! He finished 12 days on the amoxicillin. I don't know why I didn't mention it to the vet when she prescribed it, because in the past Trixter has had tummy troubles with it. I was just so overwhelmed, I guess. He acts like such a beast at the vet. :-|

The vet definitely knows about Trixter's megacolon. I'm gonna ask that they keep an extra special eye on him when he's coming out of the anesthesia. I've been giving him more meds leading up to Thursday so he should be pretty cleaned out by then. I am so nervous! AHHHHH!!! nailbite_smile

I'm also going to ask for copies of the blood test results for both boys, so hopefully people here can help me analyze them?

Thanks again for responding. <3
