Meet Maverick

Hi everyone,
I have been reading this forum since Maverick was diagnosed in October. I am posting here since he is on Prozinc to see if I am on the right track. I initially was hoping a small dose would work for him, but according to lab work at the vet he is uncontrolled. Fructosamine was over 600 in November (2 units Prozinc BID) and 594 in December (3 units Prozinc BID). Thankfully for this amazing resource I worked up the nerve to begin home testing him. He does great as long as he is distracted by eating a treat (freeze dried chicken or purely fancy feast) and I am getting better at it too.
He is food obsessed and I am hoping that will improve with better blood sugar control. He was on Friskies pates, but I have switched to Sheba pates since they are lower carb and he is enjoying them equally. Behaviorally he wakes me every 2 hours during the night for food. I have ordered the 2 compartment feeder on Amazon and will see if that helps.
I am trying during the day to not feed him extra until he has reached a nadir. Any advice on when to feed at night? I also make sure to not feed him if insulin is due in 2 hours.
I appreciate you looking at his spreadsheet and for any advice you have to offer. I sent the link to my vet and am waiting to hear his input.

I am an RN of 14 years and he's definitely one of my most challenging patients. Also I feel like a new mom, sleep when the cat sleeps....

Hi and welcome :)

Great that you've already been looking and reading a lot of info on this board! It looks like you've collected already a lot of info about how this sugar dance works ;)

I could be wrong, but looking at Maverick's spreadsheet it looks to me that 4U is a bit much. Let me explain why I think that,, it's because normally a kitty should only drop 50% down from it's pre shot number. Maverick does seem to make drops that are more then 50% then his pre shot number.

Feeding at night is sometimes a challenge. Do you have more cats at home or is he the only one? If he's he only one you could consider trying to use an automatic feeder that gives good at certain times. I think it's great! I've got one for my kitty Baco and she loves it. She's not diabetic anymore but she still get fed via the automatic feeder.

Haha, feeling like a new mom isn't strange to hear ;) we've all been there.

Welcome to you and Maverick! He's very handsome. :)

Hurray for you doing the home testing, feeding low carb wet food and setting up a spreadsheet. I see there that your doses are changed in whole units. Our recommendation is to change in 0.25 u increments so you don't accidentally overshoot a good dose. If you have U40 syringes with half unit marks on them you can eyeball the 0.25 u amounts.

I agree with Ruby that 4 u is probably too high based on the drops that exceed 50% of his PS number. That 50% is just a guideline but it gives you an idea whether a dose is too high or too low.

Automatic feeders are wonderful. I used it even when home during the day. Smokey was fed every 3 hrs around the clock for a couple of reasons.

You could try taking his total food for the day and spreading out like every 4 hrs. No food 2 hrs prior to insulin shot.

Thanks guys for looking! He is my only pet and he rules the house. I noticed his drops were quite pronounced on the 19th and today and he was pretty stagnant yesterday in the 200's all day.
I have U-40 syringes with 0.5 units markings ordered and on the way.

Post here any time you want help or have a question. :)

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I had my vet look at the numbers from 11/21 and 11/22 and he agreed that we should lower the dose from 4 units of Prozinc BID to 3 units BID. I did the curves without feeding and it was torture for both of us. I have decided to feed every 4 hours and we are both happier with that. He's still dropping about 50% and truthfully maybe I haven't captured the nadir without testing hourly. What do you think about the 3 units?

I am still waiting for my 0.5 unit syringes to arrive so I can dose in smaller increments.

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Looks good. The 0,5 u syringes will help you fine tune. :)
