Medical Help Needeed; Ms Kitty has gone ahead

Hello to All:
1 / 7 /2011 i found a starved kitty barely alive. Took it to my vet.....vet said about 8 yrs old , about 3 lbs , no found diseases , gave it a rabies shot , and a shot of fluids. Vet said i was probably wasting my time to help her but how could i not TRY and save her life. Since then , and as we speak , i am giving her pedeilite (sp ) , gatorade , any food she will eat (and that is only a few specks of food ) , Nu-Cal ( in a tube that is full of vitamins ). To do this i must use a dropper and hand feed her. She is not strong enough to stand up so i have her positioned between pillows to keep her up-right.

Can anyone give me any more ideas of how to help her. What about subqubacious (sp) fluids under the skin ..... if so how would i do this. Frank , now in his 5th year honeymoon , when i needed diabetes help i remember some mothers talking about subqubacious fluids.. Please , any suggestions of what i can do to try and save this angels life would be so welcomed......any foods , any better liquids , etc. Right now i am praying to St. Francis to help me and her . I will put a light blanket over her before i close my eyes for the evening.......God Bless all of you
Pace

Re: Medical Help Needeed

I would think sub-q. but why did'nt the vet think of this.
when something is starving they cannot start eatting whole amounts of food right away.
sub q, intra veinous fluids.
whatever happens this kitty has love now...love and tenderness,, sometimes works miracles.
wish i knew what to advise, have you tried small amount of baby food?

Re: Medical Help Needeed

I believe body temperature ois very important when they are this sick. Wrapping the kitty up in a blanket is very good, maybe even a warm water bottle. I am trying to get more eyes for you. How do the toes feel? cool, warm?
Offering little bits of food often.....can you set an alarm and get up and check, like every four hours or so?
High calorie kitten food, foods with gravy, as well as the stuff with nutrient as you are doing. Kitty needs calories.

Keeping everything crossed for your rescue.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

reminds of me the starved german shepard found in ca. months back. had just hours maybe day to live but love and care brought him back. he healthy happy and strong now. gentle massage as well and warm baby food. her muscles may be hurting from malnurishment. i am very much in favor of the sub-q if you have it available. small doses.
did i say...your an angel.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

Pace, bless you for trying to help.

I agree with Kimmee about the heating - do you have a heating pad you can set at the lowest setting, and put several layers between her and the pad?

I'm not a vet...so, you need to contact the vet again in the morning and ask about getting the fluids. The vet or a tech will need to show you how to give them, how much, and set you up with the supplies. If the vet is closed and won't answer, you need to contact the closest 24-hour hospital.

If you have a jar of baby food, sit with her and see if she will lick the food out of the lid. If she won't eat the baby food - try putting a little on your finger and put it on her lips. She should lick that off at the least, and if not, open her mouth and put a taste on her tongue. Try any type of food you have - but I vote for pureeing something for ease of eating for her. If she eats the baby food I wouldn't worry so much about the fluids that you don't have now (assuming you can't get them tonight - if you have an ER and can go, I would urge you to go that route. You might also call and see if they will give you advice in this situation).

I also suggest that you give her a name, or a nickname - some term of endearment, and whisper that into her ear. Tell her to fight, and that you will help her get better.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

This was just posted on another thread, and I thought that it might be useful here as well.

THE '~LIVER SHAKE~' FOR SICK CATS

This liquid food is appropriate for cats suffering from conditions where they are eating very little or not at all such as anemias, leukemias, deficiency states with symptoms of lethargy, listlessness, and weakness.

1 cup RAW LIVER (BEEF, or CHICKEN)
1 cup FRESH CARROT JUICE or V-8, or Tomatoe Juice
1/4 cup *FRESH FILTERED WATER
1 RAW EGG YOLK
1 tsp.KELP POWDER OR SPIRULINA

COMBINE AND MIX IN A BLENDER UNTIL LIQUEFIED. (Note: it will be frothy)

Dosage:

Administer 10cc daily 3-6 times a day. (6Occ per day max)

Some cats will need to be force-fed with a syringe, while others will drink it out of a bowl.

This food has a sweet and salty taste, and the energetic properties of tonifying (energy boosting), warming and stimulating and supports the kidneys, spleen, liver and stomach.

This drink is a complete dinner for a sick cat until they feel good enough to eat by themselves again.

*Substitute rice water if the cat has diarrhea. Rice water
is made by boiling white rice (2 Tbsp) with water (1cup) for 30 minutes.
This liquid aids digestion and assimilation and inhibits the symptoms of diarrhea.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

You've gotten some great advice and I can only add my "ditto" to all of the above. And also to tell you that "warm hands on" and love can work miracles and we're hoping that you get one of those miracles tonight for this sweet baby. Bless you for trying so hard to save her - at least the vet didn't find any major diseases - hopefully she will be able to regain her strength and begin to fight again to live.

Fluids are not difficult to give and the suggestion to speak to an ER about that is a good one - has she responded at all to any of the baby food you've tried to feed? Hoping that she will respond to you - will be watching for an update and sending lots of healing vibes.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

Bless you for helping this kitty. Things I have used to get some nurishment into a sick kitty include the runny (but cooked, not raw) yoke of an egg from my finger, Beechnut baby food chicken or turkey (make sure no onions) off the finger room temp or slightly warmed and also made into soup and slowly syringed via the side of the mouth (Walgreens pharmacy gave me free syringe type things), bits of raw chicken breast, turkey luncheon meat, a bit of warm milk. And I would think the fluids would help. You will want to go slow and give small amounts many times a day (have seen that on Animal Planet with starving animals). Will say a prayer for the kitty and you.

Re: Medical Help Needeed

Do you have any Hill's A/D food? Or can you get some? The ER vet by me sells it w/o a prescription, but it's not cheap. ($1.50 for a 5.5 oz can maybe?) It's great for syringe feeding though, and most cats love it. Gets my foster kittens eating usually when they're really sick. Really easy to use for syringe feeding too. I think you really need to get some substance in her.

I'm not positive either, but I'm shocked your vet gave her a rabies shot in this condition?? I'm not sure if that matters, but I know our shelter does NO shots until an animal is healthy.

Anyway.. can you give more fluids? Sounds like she got fluids at the vet.. but if she's still not eating, she'll need fluids daily until she starts eating & drinking on her own. Can you get a bag of fluids (Lactated Ringers Solution - LRS) from the vet? I can't believe she's only 3 lbs & 8 YEARS old?? Probably start with 50ml of fluids & see how she absorbs that. If it's within 12 hours, give 50ml more. Usually you can give around 100ml a day for adults when dehydrated. (As long as kitty doesn't have heart issues)

I really think she may start feeling better if you gave her some cat food via syringe. Even if it's any kind of wet food out there, blended w/ some extra water or something. Let me know if you need detailed instructions on syringe/forced feeding, or sub-q fluids! Those are a couple things I at least know about!

OH.. and the heating pad is a good idea, but PLEASE keep a close watch on her. If she can't move by herself, move her off of it every so often. Usually they can move off of it when they get too hot, but if she can't even crawl or move much, you'll have to really watch to make sure she doesn't overheat either. (Watch for signs of kitty overheating.. acting upset, fidgeting, panting, ears hot, etc.. If kitty is nestled in a warm bed all curled up, sleeping, then is most likely ok.)

Re: Medical Help Needeed

We rescued one in very similar condition a couple of years ago, although much younger, truer kitten than a cat, but we got KMR that at first we syringe fed then once he started eating on his own a little bit they we mixed it in with really soupy cat food. Today that same cat is a lovely 4 year old sleeping on my couch right now.

KMR is kitten replacement milk, you can get it much like regular baby formula, either in power that you mix with water or liquid. We used the liquid to syringe feed and then added the powdered form to his food for awhile until he got all his strength back.

I don't know if it would be as effective on an adult cat, but it sure couldn't hurt as it contains everything a kitten would be getting from their mom.

Bless you for at least trying to save this little angel

Re: Medical Help Needeed

To all of you that responded my heart cries tears of thankfulness. This morning , i am in North Carolina , around 9:AM another one of Gods' most precious children went to be with Him and St. Francis. Yes , my heart is broken yet i know that i did all i could do to save her life ; i named her Ms Kitty. No longer will she be starving or cold ; at least her last few days were filled with love , warmth , and a few morsels of food and water. As bad as it hurts , i will forever continue to take in the poorest and the sickest of all our four-legged gifts that God has bestowed upon us.

In my heart of hearts , i know that since God can not be every where , He created this site ........ Feline Diabetes ............ All of you are angels that God has collectively put together to do His work.

Ms Kitty and i will forever be grateful to you. PS ------------ If i ever run for President of the US my first enacted Law will make " Animal Cruelty " punishable by using the Death Penalty . May i count on your vote ! ! ! !

With my Love
Pace and Frank

Pace, my heart goes out to you....I know how very much you wanted MsKitty to pull through. MsKitty, in her last days, knew warmth, kindness, compassion and love. Sometimes that is all we can give them in the short time they are with us. I do have to question why that vet gave her a rabies shot. It wouldn't have stopped it if she did have rabies and she was too weak to be vaccinated. You gave her a chance and love and she didn't die alone in the cold. I am so sad for you and we all know and understand how very hard this is emotionally.

I'm so sorry .... Pace you are an angel for trying to save this little girl and I know you did all you could for her. Sometimes no matter how hard we try God has other plans. At least her last days were full of love.

God Bless You

Fly free Ms Kitty

You are a blessing to all the ms. and mr. kitties of the world Pace. My heart is full just knowing she did not die cold and alone on the streets, is that strange? I don't mind so much that she left this lifetime as long as she could do it with warm gentle hands trying to comfort her, soft words giving her love, a warm home filled with God's grace, which is a person like you.
Fly free dearest amoung all the animals, Ms.Kitty

I'm so sorry that Ms. Kitty couldn't stay with you for longer. I do believe that she knew that she was safe and loved. It doesn't seem to matter how long kitties are with us - they wriggle into a little place in our lives and leave a little space when they go to another place. You are wonderful for giving her so much love that she could safely pass on her journey.

Dearest Pace,

I'm truly sorry about Ms Kitty. Bless you for making room in your heart for this tiny furry girl. She left knowing she was finally loved...

Please accept my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies, and my tears...

Her candle shines brightly...

Fly free, precious Ms Kitty! Soar high on your tiny furry wings! And, please look for an ornery furry black girl named Giz at The Bridge. She has assured my heart she will warmly welcome you and gently show you the best sun spots and places to chase butterflies...

Much love and countless gentle hugs for you and your sadly aching heart, Pace,
Deb and Nikki -- and Giz, forever whispering in my heart, and organizing the welcoming committee as I type...

I am so sorry that Ms Kitty is gone.

She will be forever in your memory, though her time here on
earth was short.

Poor sweet little thing. Bless you for taking her in.

Oh no.. I'm so sorry Ms Kitty didn't make it. It may have been her time, but I have no doubt you were supposed to make the transition a little easier & with more love in her life before she went.

(((HUGS))) & tears,
-Steph

God needed Ms Kitty and found you to help her lovingly through this transition. You are truly and angel and one of Gods special helpers. Bless you and Bless Ms Kity.

Jeanne

My deepest sympathy on your loss. I was watching this thread and sending every vibe I could that your precious Ms Kitty would pull through. You did all you could, and that's all anyone can ask.

The one thing I do know is that Ms Kitty crossed to the Bridge knowing what love and kindness means. She was warm, she was loved, she knew the gentleness of a human hand, and she was unafraid. And now, she has a name and her own human to wait for ... because of you.

Fly free, Ms Kitty. You won't be forgotten.

You did an awesome job making her last days wonderful. She left knowing love. That's a great thing. Thank you for having such a kind heart.
