My Maynard boy, who is going to be 20 in January, has started to become lethargic, slowing down in eating and drinking. He was diagnosed with beginning kidney issues in November and has been doing great up until now. These symptoms have been appearing slowly and they are probably expected. I know this is a diabetes board, and Maynard does not have diabetes, but alot of you are familiar with me and Maynard, so just want to get some opinions.

I have been giving him B liquid complex once or twice a week, and it seems like it is making him worse. Can this be? I am giving him Twinlab Super B Complex. I sure hope I have not been making him worse...............http://www.vitacost.com/Twinlab-Liquid-Super-B-Complex

Now, today, he is eating a/d today that i have. Not sure if it is good for him or not, but since he is eating it, i am going to let him. I am also mixing water with it so he is getting some water with that. he is also going to the water bowl a little more today. ;-)

He has an appt wed for the vet. I am sure they will repeat the bloodwork. He hasn't been tested since november, because he has been doing great since then.

In november they were:
BUN 32 (16-36)
CREA 2.7 (0.8-2.4)
BUN/CREA 12
His T4 was ok as well, but I do not remember what it was now.

I have been avoiding the fluid route, but he does seem to be getting dehydrated. I have given fluids to my other cats in the past, but it didn't seem to help. I don't think the vet would give me fluids because they haven't seen him in about 8 months.

I hate taking him outside, but I don't know what other option I have. PLEASE HELP with any advise others have on this.

Do yo have an blood level for potassium and phosphorus?
Do you know the urine specific gravity?
Do you know the blood hematocrit value?
The above measurements help to determine how bad the kidneys are sine the BUN and creatinine are not bad at all.
I would give subQ fluids if your vet agrees.
For good info on kidney problems see:
http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm

Cats with kidney problem can't really absorb B vitamins that well so usually they are vice subQ. They can be added to the subQ fluids.

Look over the list of Secondary Monitoring Tools in my signature link and do as many of those as possible before you see the vet. Those will provide some clues to you and the vet as to what is happening. Note: if you get moderate to severe tenting of the skin when you pull it up and release it, go to the vet asap. That level of dehydration puts a further strain on the kidneys and indicates a more serious issue.

***UPDATE*****

We just got back and his blood work is just about the same as it was 1 1/2 yrs ago, so his kidneys seem to be holding their own. They are not great, but at least they didn't get worse. Doctor does not feel at this point to start fluids. nailbite_smile

they checked his blood pressure 3 times and they said it was 80 each time,so that was ok - little low, but........
his heart rate was 160, so that was ok
he had no temperature, so that was ok
vet also thought possible infection, but no temperature? gave me amoxi

ALSO - Maynard has been having some "episodes" where he falls down and goes limp. About 3 in the past 1 1/2 yrs. I thought they were seizures, but the doctor say they were not seizures. He believes Maynard may have some heart issues. He is not for sure, but he wants me to start listening to his heart beat with the stethoscope while he is normal and when/if he has another episode.

WOW - I never thought about it might be his heart. That would explain the lethargy and weakness lately. So, that is my next process in this journey with Maynard. Feeling somewhat relieved about his kidneys but scared about his heart!!! :o
