Donna's post about Asher needing a dental made me wonder about Sam, so I decided to have a better look at his teeth. I put him belly up on my legs to look at his mouth and found a wound on his chin! He had a pimple there and must have scratched it (Sam is prone to feline acne, no matter that all the bowls are glass or ceramic, he just gets them on his chin from time to time.) Anyway, there was a lot of crusted blood there, so I cleaned it up and could see a small open wound (about the size of a grain of couscous). I put some neosporin on it, but now I'm wondering if he could have a little infection going on. I guess I need to get him into the vet, but this couldn't happen at a worse time as my husband got laid off last week.

I'll keep an eye on it over the next day or two and if it's not healing, I'm taking him in. *sigh*

Good find. But may not be anything serious. Squamee had feline acne and sometimes they got bloody and scabbed over, but I showed them to the vet who said they were nothing and just to put some neosporin on them.
Stinks about your husband's job. Hope it is not for long. These are rotten uncertain times.

Thanks, Judy, that's good to know and reassuring.

As it is, I ended up giving him a small dose at +6 (.2) because I'm still not happy with his numbers. As soon as my company is gone, I'm thinking I'm going to TID for as long as I can to try to put him into a nice, healing space for a while.

There is never a good time for a dental or diabetes or car repairs, they just happen.

I knew Harley's teeth were bad but it wasn't until I found my new vet that he flat out told me Harley's 4 stage plan to get OTJ was a dental (he said he was in alot of pain because of the infections, it broke my heart), Harley needs to lose weight, I need to switch to a raw diet and finally treat his arthritus. I have spent every cent that I had saved up for a newer car to get to this point but he is 5 days OTJ and starting to stay in the greens more and more and it is worth every cent, the car will have to last a few more years.

You'll get there with Sam. We do what we can do.

Yes Hooray Robin & Harley!!! [anti-jinx]

Kristen, sorry about DH's job, that is tough. Hope he finds something quickly, but (having been there myself) I'd plan for the long-haul just in case.

I think you can do warm compresses too, even for a few minutes if that's all he'll let you. Maybe ask on Health. I had a cat once who had a minor abcess on his chin and that's vaguely what I recall, but it's been quite a few years.

I hope I haven't already beaten you over the head with this :-D but I'd be cautious with the shots at +6. I've done them before out of panic, and all it ever really did for me was confuse things, and then once give me a 50 or something a couple hours later that was simultaneously welcome & freak-out, and then WTH do I shoot at the next shot time? My vote would be just to up his dose more, maybe 0.8 rather than 0.7, and give that 3 cycles, and then go up to 1u, but stick with BID. If you wanted to do TID, fine, but +6's really make me nervous.

Of course you can do what you want :-D , just want to be sure you are aware that it's riskier than shooting a little later.

Also (and maybe you already did this) you always want to do a rising # test on an early shot. So if you don't already have a spot test done around nadir time that lets you see if you are rising from there, then you want to do 2 tests something like 10 minutes apart to check for a rising #.

Of course for most cats 0.2 isn't a huge risk, but you just never know. If your 1st dose hasn't nadired yet you are potentially adding the 2 doses together, rather than having them overlap back to back.

Keeping you in our prayers Kristen, with the job thing. Tom and I are both self employed here, so the last couple years have been interesting.
Somehow you just make it. Be pos and talk to all your contacts and friends and colleagues from your past. It’s the only way thru it as we see it.

Hopefully this boo boo on Sam’s chin isn’t a big deal. Asher scratches his head open occasionally and we have good healing luck with just one small application of hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip. Don’t know if that is officially a good thing to do but it has worked for us. Most scratches look like they heal in a day or so.

You and I probably both have to deal with this dental thing within a reasonable future tho. It’s on my short list. But I don’t feel the vibe to deal with it right now this very second.

All the best to you guys.

peace,

-d.

So sorry to hear about your DH's job. When things are already stressful, that is a big one to add to the list. You'll be in my thoughts that he can find something else quickly. Hope Sam's chin heals lickity-split and you can start seeing the numbers you want soon. So hard when our fur babies can't tell us what is the matter. Sounds like we're all in the same boat on the dental. Max needs one too.
