may i ask, my cat is 2.8kg, 17 year old. what is the max dose for her on lantus?

thx
anson

there is not a max dose for lantus or levemir; you will use the dose that works to get your cat's BG into a good range.

My two cats have acromegaly, and so they receive high doses.
Shadoe is going up to 8u tonite, and Oliver is currently at 20u BID.

If you are finding that your cat is needing an ever increasing dose, you may want to have your vet look into the reason for such a high dose.

What is the current dose you are giving and what are your cat's BG numbers?

edit to add:
just looked at ss now.
I see you increased to 5u; maybe give that dose a chance to settle, have the shed fill, and see what you get?
I was wondering if there was any chance that you could get more tests in so you can see what's happening around mid-cycle? It would be good to know what his nadir is, and if he is flat high numbers all through or if he is dropping low at some point and then bouncing.

Hi Anson

I got some information for you, but for what you are asking about - there is no such thing as measuring maximum dose.

There is a formula for initial starting dose of Lantus (below), but it's not applicable to what you are asking.

If a kitty has been using another insulin or has already been on Lantus, that info may have to be considered along with the formula.

0.25 IU per kg of the cat's ideal weight
[Ideal weight in kg.] x .25 = units of Lantus
converting:
lbs./2.2 = kg.
kg. x 2.2 = lbs.

I just wanted to add, we are a data collecting forum based on BG numbers taken from a blood glucose meter.
The urine testing numbers make it difficult to see how Lantus is going with Siujim. Not many of us are familiar with urine testing numbers.
Would you be able to continue testing with a meter?
Do continue to check for ketones thou.

I hope this helps. We would love to see you posting daily so we can see how your kitty is doing.
I understand there is a time difference, but there is always usually someone around late at nite, or early morning.
