Never used that food myself, but vet nutritionist Dr. Lisa Pierson's food chart lists that food as 8% carbs. That food is on page 16-17 of the chart.

For unknown reasons, some cats exhibit greater sensitivity to some foods and some flavors of foods than they do to only slightly different foods. So even though the carbs look to be low, your kitty may spike on the Max Cat with Savory Duck. It may be the potato starch and wheat gluten ingredients are just enough to cause an issue for your cat Martha. That's about the best I can tell you.

My Cleo had the same problem with the Max Cat 8% carb. She loved it, but it really spiked her BG. Have not tried it in a while. It is also low phosphorus, so I was hoping it would be a good choice for us.

Thank you for your replies. I thought this was the "perfect food." Everything about it. Plus they just gobbled it right up. Sigh.....

Timing is everything - many cats may demonstrate a food spike when given fresh food. This will happen about 2 hours after eating and is normal. It should begin to drop as the insulin kicks in in the next hour.

About this Max Cat......each time Martha eats it, her bg shoots up over 200. What is the deal if it's so low in carbs? Can anyone explain it? She really loves this food but I'm afraid to feed it to her.

Which Max Cat flavors are you feeding specifically? I'm looking at the commercial food chart we use, put together by vet Dr. Lisa Pierson, and I'm seeing carb percentages ranging from 8 to 27% !!!!! :o  :o We recommend under 10% carbs from calories, as fed values.

Here is the food chart link. So you can see for yourself, those Max Cat cat foods may not be in low as carbs as you want to be feeding to your diabetic cat.

Chicken Supreme, Turkey & Chicken Liver, with Savory Duck, with Savory Venison are the only ones of this brand that are under the 10% carb limit, and they are all either 8 or 9% carbs.

Most of the Fancy Feast classic pate style foods are lower in carbs than this. You have that in your signature as what you are feeding.
