You may be interested in reading a bit more about Lantus. In the Lantus and Levemir forum, there are 7 "Stickys" at the very top that help explain how it works, how to take care of it, and a couple of protocols that you can use with it.

How are you doing with everything else? Feel free to tell us a little bit more about you and Marmy. :D

Thanks for your responses. I am using Lantis insulin. Dr. Pierson has helped get the food regimen right. We have 3other kitties, all with medical issues. Mystic our oldest is 15 and eats voraciously and drinks a lot and peas a lot he is losing. He is losing weight and has been tested for diabetes etc. he takes medication for hyperthyroid and he is impossible to get to the vet. Mia, is Marmalade's older sister. She is almost 10 and Marmy is almost 9. Mia is quite overweight but since coming off of the dry food she has lost a pound and a half. We are keeping her calories under 180 a day.
Marmy eats a lot also. Both she and Mystic are free feeding, sorta, when they meow for food we feed them. We give them at least 45% protein and less than 10% carbs and under 400 phosperous. Then we have sweet Pee in the heated , carpeted garage. She was a feral who came to our door 3 years ago. She is about 10and deaf. She has asthma and CKD both of which we are treating. She is a love but the three M,s won,t accept her in the house. The greatest hour or two of my day is the quality time I spend with her purring on my lap in the garage. Can't imagine what her life was like before she found us but she was in bad shape. She is now happy and well cared for.
All four of our kitties were rescues along with a beautiful black cat, Magic who we lost last Fall. He was almost 18, such a gentle guy. He is missed.
Of course Marmy is our biggest challenge. Our goal is to get her into remission because she is so young but it really difficult trying to understand her roller coaster numbers on the Google chart.
Would love to hear from any of you.
 
OKAY. Thanks for the welcome. If someone of the more knowledgable members, (that would be Most everyone I guess) could look at Marmalade,s Google chart and tell me if we are getting anywhere I would be most grateful.

Your signature shows up at the bottom of each post you make. You can edit it under your profile and put in tidbits of info such as your name,y your cat's name, the insulin you are using, date of diagnosis, etc.
Mine shows 3 links with information to commonly asked questions.
I'm on my phone and it won't let me go to your spreadsheet. I'll try when I get on my laptop at home.

If others can comment on marmalade's lantus spreadsheet that would be great. I feel that the dose maybe have been increased to high too quickly and have given some pointers on the initial starting dose and linked the tight regulation protocol and the start low go slow protocol as an idea for a starting doe, etc. if others could comment too that would be great
 
Thank you so much for your reply. Dr. Lisa Pierson is orchestrating the dosage for Marmy. And she tells me Marmy is a hard one to figure. My local vet jumped her from 1 to 3 units early on as you can se and that night she went below 20. Scary moment to be sure. She seems fine in many ways now. She is playful, not drinking so much, has a good appetite and may have regained a little weight after dropping from 10 to 8 pounds quite quickly when she was first diagnosed. I am amazed that she lets me stick her ear and give her the injections. Hope we can get her off the roller coaster readings soon. I feel sorry for her little ears.
 
They do heal quickly by themselves but it helps to apply pressure straight afterwards and to try to only hit the sweet spot at the edge of the ear.

US members use a product, the name escapes me at the moment. Oh I think it is something like neosporin.
 
It is neosporin. If you get the one with pain relief, but the ointment not the cream - it has the added advantage of helping the blood bead up instead of soaking into the fur if you use just a tiny bit before you do the test.
 
If you have trouble getting hold of neosporin, you can use a tiny film of Vaseline on the test site to help the blood bead up into a little droplet for testing.
 
Actually have been doing that. But now am using triple antibiotic with pain reliever which contains neosporin. But this little cat really has become resigned Tuesday the ear poking and the insulin injections. She actually sleeps with me at night now along with her sister, Mia, on and off, (quite literally) so my bed is a bit crowded. How is your beautiful Saorse doing. We lost our oldest black cat, Magic, last fall. Heartbreaking. He was such a love. Aren,t they all!
 
Don't forget to give low carb treats after each test. That will help them to put up with the testing.
 
Wow! Just looked at your kitty's chart. What a journey! What does OTJ mean? Off the juice? With my prayers that he continues doing well now.
 
Do you mean me:). Yes OTJ means diet controlled diabetic. Both my cat and Aine cat followed a similar path. Catch the diabetes early, treat it with a long lasting insulin and try to get them well regulated. This hopefully gives the cats pancreas an opportunity to heal.
 
Marmalade would NEVER let me forget to give her her treat after her BG a test. And our other two, her sister, Mia and our old guy, Mystic also line up for a treat after her ear prick because they stood quietly by and behaved. Then I feel that our deaf CKD, Asthmatic feral cat, Sweet Pee, who lives in our heated garage should also have a treat so I go give her one. She has a liquid medicine given by mouth with a syringe and an aerocat inhaler to help her breath better. So twice a day she gets a couple more treats.
 
Just looked at your chart. What a great Christmas present to have your kitty off of insulin! What a great job you did! Did you ever sleep?
 
I got into a routine of giving the insulin at 6m and 6 pm so that gave me plenty of time of get the tests in. I was lucky that I am okay at going to bed late and getting up early but it was a tiring time but both me and my partner were committed to trying to get remi regulated early.

The members of the lantus sub forum were invaluable and would thoroughly recommend making use of their experience. They can help guide and steer you on dosage. If you have a look at people's threads over there you will see what I mean. Readings other cats spreadsheets is also helpful so keep doing that.

Saoirse's numbers are back in the healing range again today, but still higher than I'd like. Thank you for asking about her. :) She's due to see our vetty bean on Wednesday for a review and a B12 injection so I'm hoping that will help her.

I hope Marmalade's doing OK today.
 
How do I post on the Lantus forum? Marmy had +5 score of 30 and + 6 of 85 and I'm not sure if I should shoot the 2.5 that I have been giving her.
 
Scroll down the main forums page until you get to the 'insulin support groups' section. Then click on the Lantus/Levemir sub-forum and use the post new thread button at the top right of the screen. That 30 is a very low reading - please get some advice on what to do with dosing from the more experienced members in that section as that looks like a dose reduction is needed.

I'll drop a link to this thread into Lantus/Levemir too with a request for advice in case you have problems creating a new thread.
 
A 'score', or blood glucose of mg/dL is call for a reduction of 0.25 units in dose. Please confirm that asap with Dr Pierson. And make sure you have some high carb gravied food and some Karo or other syrup on hand, as we would consider that number one where you should intervene to get the numbers higher. It is dangerously close to hypoglycemia.
 
Thank you. Just spoke with Dr. Pierson by phone and we decided to drop back to fat 2. She has been ill so I wasn't sure I would hear back from her. Thanks for your advice.

Oh good, I was pretty sure she'd concur, as she knows the Lantus protocols here. I hope she feels better soon.

Also note that sometimes meters get wonky, so whenever you get an unusual test, be it high or low, test again.

Just in case the numbers drop low on you again, this link on How to Handle a Hypo should be printed out and posted at home, so you have guidance in case of an urgent situation.
 
Thank you so much. I actually have two identical meters and have used the second one twice when the first one registered low and they concurred so I wasreasurred they were ok. I also printed the Hypo info. And have the Tool Kit which I had to use very early(see chart) on when my local vet increased the insulin dosage from one to three u its and Marmy became mildly hypo at 1:30 am. That was when I switched to Dr.Pierson.

Good luck at the vets tomorrow. I could use some b12 myself. You do take great care of your kitty.
We are expecting a significant snow storm here tonight and tomorrow so I can closely monitor Marmy. The very low score at +5 today was a little scary.

Glad you caught that low number. I know you are going to reduce the dose but please keep a close eye on him, especially as the deposit from the higher dose will still be hanging around in his body. I used to try and get a a+2 and +4 so you tell where they are heading and then steer the blood glucose with food.

Please post up a new thread if marmalade goes low again and state what her numbers are. It is important that you follow the protocol and give honey, karo or gravy to bring the numbers up but then carry on testing and repeating until the cat is out of the danger zone but then keep testing to see that she doesn't just fall back down again.
 
I was looking at your chart...very similar to my own diabetic. All over the place. I will try to link Gadgets chart to my signature I have not done it. I do not see what kind of meter you are using? I'm just curious. We are on the same ride! My cat also started home testing in early December and I'm also using Dr Lisa. She's a God send. Right now my cat is a skinny 2 twice a day.
 
I've managed to get Gadget's spreadsheet linked to my signature. Maybe it will comfort you to see that we are all over the place too? But we have never been as low as you.

I am using Reli-on Confirm meter. And thank you for posting Gadget's chart. These all over the place numbers are frustrating. Thank goodness for Dr. Pierson. She isn't feeling well herself but did talk with me briefly today about Marmy's low score. Patience and consistency and faith and we will help our kitties through is?
 
That is reassuring, I'm sure, esp. When the numbers are all over the place. Dr. Pierson recommended theReli-On so I feel very comfortable with it.
Now to get ready for the major snow storm we are getting tonight. How can the poor animals who are out there survive in this frigid temperature?!
