I was at work, so my mom was taking care of her. She didn't eat her breakfast, so my mom called the emergency vet for advice. The emergency vet said to give her her insulin anyway. Three units of insulin on an empty stomach. Luckily Mari had a vet appointment scheduled for today or she would have been home alone until 5pm. Her BG was at 42. She should be fine, but I worry about what could have happened.

I'm just so frustrated. The shelter told us when we adopted Mari that we were absolutely not to give her insulin if she didn't eat. Not only that, but the emergency vet gave out blatantly incorrect and dangerous advice. I'm going to have to sit down with my family and explain to them exactly what to do if something like this happens again.
 
How scary!!!! So glad things worked out!

It's probably a good idea to write something up for your family-- I bet they'd appreciate having clear, unambiguous instructions to refer to when you are gone. No one would want to be the one to cause a tragedy!
 
Just an update - while I wasn't able to be at the vet appointment, the vet called me at home this evening. She recapped everything that happened at the appointment, and confirmed my suspicions that Mari's food isn't ideal for her and her insulin dose is unusually high. This was the first appointment with this vet, so I'm glad to know that she seems well-informed and reasonable, or at least better than the emergency vet.
 
Presumably that 42 was on a pet meter. :eek: Very glad that Mari's OK.

I know just how nerve-wracking/terrifying/frustrating it is when one has to deal with FD without decent veterinary support. Hope things will be better with your new vet.

Are you home testing BG yet? If yes, it would be great if you could add details of the meter you're using to your signature line.
